ALBANY, N.Y- The Army West Point softball team (10-311, 6-6 PL) was bested by UAlbany (23-11, 9-5 AE) in both games of their final non conference road match up.
GAME 1 (L, 7-3)
In the bottom of the first, the Black Knights swiftly got on the scoreboard with a one-run double from Sophie Smith, driving Kayla Edwards home.
The Great Danes responded promptly in the bottom of the first, as Morgan Petty's homer to left-center tied the game heading into the second inning.
Albany's starting pitcher, Wendi Hammond, effectively contained Army's hitters in the top of the second, setting the stage for UAlbany's offensive surge in the bottom of the inning.
The Great Danes notched two consecutive one-run singles followed by a ground out to third base, extending their lead to 4-1.
Army's relief pitcher, Katelyn Flanders, held Albany scoreless in the next two innings, but Albany's defense also made scoring difficult for Army.
It wasn't until the top of the fifth inning that Army regained momentum, thanks to a home run from Mia Bonsignore, her second in her career. Then, Edwards added another run with a single up the middle, bringing Mikayla Klepfer home and narrowing the Black Knights' deficit to two.
However, Albany responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs off a single and an Army throwing error.
Both teams remained scoreless in the sixth inning, unable to muster any hits.
In the final inning, Army failed to capitalize, ultimately succumbing to UAlbany with a final score of 7-3.
GAME 2 (L, 4-3)
Army once again took the lead in the opening inning as Kayla Edwards crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Both teams remained scoreless in the following innings. Army's starting pitcher, Lauren Levendoski, conceded only one hit and struck out two batters in the initial three frames.
The scoring drought for Army was broken in the third inning when Ashton White scored on an RBI by Emma Murchison, extending their lead to 2-0.
Levendoski maintained her strong performance, preventing UAlbany from adding any runs over the next two innings.
In the sixth inning, Army added to their lead with another RBI, courtesy of Ashton White.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, UAlbany finally broke their scoring silence, driving in consecutive runs with single RBIs to narrow the gap to one run going into the final inning.
Army failed to add to their lead in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Great Danes fought back. Petty delivered an RBI single to tie the score, and with two outs, they secured an unearned run to clinch the game, 4-3/
