Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Seton Hall
April 24, 2024 | Softball
GAME 1Â
In the first four innings, neither Army nor Seton Hall managed to score. Olivia Farris, Army's starting pitcher, and Kyra Kreuscher, Seton Hall's starting pitcher, held the Pirates to just three hits during this time.
Army's outfield made significant plays to stifle the Pirates' offense. Parker Llantero's diving catch in the top of the second and Lauren Little's catch over the back wall in the third prevented the Pirates from adding runs to the scoreboard.
Seton Hall finally scored in the top of the fifth inning with a single to left field.
Army quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth. Mikayla Klepfer singled to send Ellie Caldwell home, followed by Llantero's RBI single to give the Black Knights the lead.
Relief pitcher Breanna Izzo secured the win in the top of the seventh by preventing the Pirates from scoring. Army won game one, 2-1.
Klepfer had a stellar performance, going two-for-two at the plate with one RBI.
GAME 2
Seton Hall kicked off the top of the first with a bang as Taylor Hill, the Pirates' leadoff hitter, secured a leadoff home run to take the lead.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second inning.
In the top of the third, Seton Hall extended their lead, scoring one run off a fielding error, prompting Army to make a pitching change to Amanda Eaglin.
Their scoring momentum continued even after the pitching change as the Pirates added another run with an RBI double.
Army struggled to score until the bottom of the fourth inning when Sophie Smith hit her first career home run, putting Army on the scoreboard and narrowing the deficit to two.
Seton Hall failed to score in the top of the fifth inning, and the Black Knights carried their momentum into the bottom half. Kayla Edwards singled for an RBI, cutting the deficit to one. Following suit, Ashton White singled for an RBI, tying the score going into the sixth inning.
However, in the top of the sixth, the Pirates refused to concede defeat, regaining the lead with a single up the middle to score one run.
Army couldn't score in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Seton Hall maintained their lead going into the seventh inning.
Breanna Izzo prevented Seton Hall from scoring in the seventh inning, but the Black Knight hitters couldn't produce a hit in the bottom of the seventh. Army fell short in the second game, losing 4-3.
