Softball Heads to Baltimore to Take on Morgan State and Wagner

WEST POINT, NY- The Army West Point Softball team (2-17) will head down to Baltimore to compete in their final invitational tournament of the 2024 season.
The tournament, hosted by Morgan State, will feature three teams in total. The Black Knights will face off against Morgan State and Wagner.
Army will kick off with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12 PM against Morgan State, followed by a match against Wagner.
On Sunday, the Bears and the Black Knights will clash at 10 AM, with Army then taking on the Seahawks.

QUICK HITTERS
Last Saturday, Army secured their second win of the season with a dominant 7-0 victory over Detroit Mercy. Sophomore Caitlyn Newburn led the scoring charge for the Black Knights by hammering a two-run home run early in the game. Left fielder Kayla Edwards went 3-for-4 in the game and added a single RBI.
In the win, Olivia Farris (1-5) pitched a complete game shutout, going the distance, allowing only four hits while striking out seven. Farris' performance in the game earned her Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors.
Newburn also received league honors for her performance this past weekend. The sophomore was named Patriot League Player of the Week for amassing two home runs, six RBI, and maintaining a solid .307 batting average across Army's four contests.
Edwards continues to lead Army in batting with a team-high .355 average, 22 hits in 62 at-bats, six RBI, two doubles, six triples, and nine runs scored.
Ashton White leads the team with 11 RBI, and Newburn leads with three home runs.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Morgan State enters the tournament with a 7-8 record. The Bears' Victoria Fletcher leads the way with a .415 batting average, nine RBI, and two home runs.
This will mark the first time in history the Bears and the Black Knights have met on the diamond.
Wagner heads to Baltimore with a 2-6 record, with their two victories coming against Norfolk State in their season opener. Payton Janicki leads Wagner with a .333 batting average, a single home run, and five RBI.
The Black Knights and the Seahawks have an extensive history, having competed 25 times with the earliest dating back to 1980. Army leads the series history 15-10. In the most recent meeting in 2013, the Black Knights took down the Seahawks 12-6.
