March 30, 2024 | Softball
LEWISBURG, PA - The Army West Point softball squad (4-25, 0-5 PL) suffered defeats in both games of the Patriot League doubleheader clash against Bucknell (14-16, 5-0 PL).
Game 1:
During the initial two innings, both Army and Bucknell managed hits but failed to convert them into runs, leaving the score deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
In the third inning, Bucknell's MaKenzie Hillings connected with an RBI double, putting Bucknell on the scoreboard.
Responding swiftly in the top of the fifth, Army's Ellie Caldwell tripled and subsequently scored on a Bucknell error, narrowing the Black Knights' deficit.
The remainder of the game turned into a defensive pitching duel between the two sides. Despite Army's pitcher, Amanda Eaglin, conceding only three hits, Army's batting lineup couldn't capitalize.
The Black Knights ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.
Despite the setback, Army's Parker Llantero had a flawless performance at the plate, going three-for-three.
Game 2:
The second game was another defensive pitching battle. Army's starting pitcher, Olivia Farris, held the Bison scoreless and limited them to two hits through four innings.
Army also struggled to score until the top of the fourth, when Ashton White's RBI single sent Kayla Edwards home.
Then, in the top of the fifth, Army's offense surged. Freshman Sam Bocis hammered her first career home run to center field, propelling the Black Knights to a 2-0 lead. Building on the momentum, Parker Llantero delivered an RBI single, bringing Samantha Sims home and extending Army's lead to 3-0.
Bucknell managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth due to an Army error.
The Bison carried their momentum into the bottom of the sixth, adding another run and reducing the deficit to one after Sarah Zimmerman tripled for a single RBI.
The game was interrupted in the seventh inning due to inclement weather but resumed in the top of the seventh, where Bucknell maintained their momentum. After retiring the Army side, the Bison secured a walk-off RBI double to clinch a 4-3 victory.
The Black Knights will aim to claim the final game of the series and secure their first league win on Sunday at noon.
