LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Army West Point softball team (4-19) clashed with Rider (6-12) on Saturday afternoon, experiencing a split outcome. The Black Knights fell short in the initial encounter, losing 3-0, but rebounded strongly in the following game, triumphing 5-2.
Game 1:
Army encountered a rocky start in the first inning, failing to secure a score. Rider capitalized on this, swiftly notching three runs in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of multiple Black Knight errors.
Throughout the remainder of the game, both Army and Rider displayed resilient defensive performances, resulting in a scoreless stalemate for the next six innings.
Despite the 3-0 setback, Freshman Sam Bocis spearheaded the offensive effort, going 1-for-2, while Ashton White contributed with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
On the pitching front, Amanda Eaglin delivered a complete game, conceding five hits, three runs, and tallying three strikeouts.
Game 2:
The second game witnessed a tight battle, with Army and Rider deadlocked at 0-0 for the first three innings. Army's starting pitcher, Olivia Farris, held the Broncs at bay throughout her tenure on the mound.
It was in the top of the fourth inning that the Black Knights' offense surged. Julia Farris kick-started the momentum with a double to right-center, followed by Mia Bonsignore's single, advancing Farris to third. Mikayla Klepfer then delivered a crucial hit, securing two RBI and putting Army on the scoreboard.
Farris efficiently navigated through Rider's lineup in the bottom of the fourth, maintaining the scoreline until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rider managed to level the score, capitalizing on an Army error and a Stoeckel RBI.
In the top of the 7th inning, Kayla Edwards singled, bringing home Samantha Sims to give Army the lead. Caitlyn Newburn then added two more RBI, extending the lead to 5-2.
During the bottom of the seventh, relief pitcher Breanna Izzo shut down Rider, allowing only one hit and zero runs to secure victory for Army.
Kayla Edwards led the offensive charge, going an impressive 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Julia Farris also contributed well, batting 2-for-3.
