Softball Falls to Utah and Missouri State on Day One of Season

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team (0-2) kicked off the 2024 campaign on Friday in the NFCA Leadoff Classic taking on #16 Utah and Missouri State. Army fell by a score of 7-2 in Game 1 to Utah and fell 9-6 in extra innings to Missouri State. Some highlights on the afternoon to build upon were sophomore Ashton White who batted 4-for-8 across the day with a HR, 2B and four RBI and senior Kayla Edwards who went 4-for-9 with two 2Bs on the day.
Game 1 vs. Utah:
Army scored first in the top half of the first, on an RBI double by sophomore Taylor Brown which platted Lauren Little in the top of the first. The Utes immediately responded on an RBI single by Leilani Melendez.
In the third, Utah platted three, two of the three unearned to Army starting pitcher Oliva Farris with an error by third baseman Julia Farris. Errors proved to be deadly for the Black Knights, committing five in the game.
O. Farris (0-1) worked 3.2 innings surrendering seven hits, six runs, only three earned runs while striking out two. Breanna Izzo came on for relief working 2.1 innings, yielding no hits but giving up one earned run.
Utah would tack on two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to take the game. 7-2.
Army senior Kayla Edwards went 2-for-4 and Brown went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
Utah's starting pitcher Sarah Ladd (1-0) picked up the complete game win, giving up seven hits and only one earned run while striking out three.
Game 2 vs. Missouri State:
Like Game 1, Army jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as sophomore Ashton White belted a two-run home run to get things started.
Army starter Amanda Eaglin worked two scoreless innings before Missouri State's Olivia Krehbiel got the Bears on the board with a solo home run in the third inning.
However, Army would strike back in the bottom half of the third when White struck again as she doubled to center field to score Kayla Edwards to give Army a 3-1 lead.
Missouri State would take the lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Kelsie Lewis, but Army tied it up at 4-4 on an RBI single from Julia Farris.
Knotted at four a piece, the game went into extra innings as Missouri State struck for five runs in the top half of the eight to make it a 9-4 game. Army would threaten as Sam Bocis and Parker Llantero had RBI singles to pull within three, 9-6, with runners on first and second with no outs, bringing the tying run to the plate but Army could not strike again as the next three batters were retired in order, ending the comeback attempt.
Ashton White went 3-4 with a HR, 2B, 3 RBI and scored a run. Julia Farris also had a three-hit game going 3-4 with an RBI.
Kayla Edwards had a multi-hit game, going 2-5 with a double and run scored.
Eaglin went 5.1 innings, yielding three runs, three hits and four walks. Freshman Lauren Levendoski (0-1) picked up the loss in relief working 2.0 innings, surrendering five hits, four runs, three earned while striking out two.
Up Next: Army will be back in action on Saturday morning, February 10 playing Indiana at 10am followed by Western Kentucky at 1pm.
