CLEARWATER, Fla. – Army West Point Softball fell to Western Kentucky and Indiana on Day 2 of its 2024 campaign at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. Saturday. After falling 7-1 to WKU, the Black Knights grabbed an early 2-0 lead against Indiana, but lost the lead a frame later and suffered a five-inning, 11-3 setback in their second outing.

Game 1 vs. Western Kentucky

Sophomore catcher Caitlyn Newburn hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Army's only run of the morning contest, and drew a walk in the seventh. Senior Ellie Caldwell and junior Julia Farris also reached base in the loss.

Junior Olivia Farris started in the circle for Army, striking out two over 2.1 frames tossed. Sophomore Breanna Izzo (2.2 innings) and Katelyn Flanders (1.0 innings) provided relief at pitcher.

The 'Toppers struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning and another run in the second, before adding another two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.

WKU's Rylan Smith picked up the win with a six-inning, six-strikeout outing.

Game 2 vs. Indiana

Sophomore Ashton White had an RBI double and fellow second-year Taylor Brown followed with an RBI single in the first inning against Indiana.

After the Hoosiers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first, Army tied the game in the third on a White single to left field to score Kayla Edwards.

White was 2-2 with a pair of RBIs against the Big Ten Conference opponent, while Caldwell, Brown and Edwards each logged hits.

Indiana plated seven runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth.

Up next: Army will close its Gulf Coast swing against No. 13 Oregon at 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
