February 10, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
ATLANTA – The No. 6/8 Army West Point men's lacrosse team opened the season with a thrilling 13-12 win over UMass.
Jacob Morin led the way for the Black Knights with a hat trick. Bailey O'Connor, Jackson Eicher, and Reese Burek each had two goals as well.
Will Coletti was unstoppable in the faceoff circle, going 21-29 while adding 13 ground balls. Those 13 move him into third all-time in program history.
The game was a back and forth affair the entire day. UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead, then a 2-1 lead, before goals from Morin and Burek gave the Black Knights their first lead of the day. Two more goals from that pair pushed the lead to 5-2.
Three unanswered between the end of the second and beginning of the third quarter from the Minutemen tied things back up.
Morin's third goal gave the Black Knights a 6-5 lead, but UMass would answer shortly after to tie it back at 6-6. After O'Connor's first goal gave Army a 7-6, UMass rattled off the next four goals to take a 10-7 lead with 10:18 left in the game.
Then Army came roaring back. Over the next 55 seconds the Black Knights got a goal from Eicher, a behind the back beauty from Finn McCullough, and a long stick goal from Ryan Nixon to tie things back up at 10 apiece. Just under three minutes later Jackson Eicher gave Army an 11-10 lead.
UMass would tie things up with 1:57 to go, but Bailey O'Connor would give Army the lead for good with 1:18 left.
Then with 37 seconds left, Will Coletti scored his first of the year to make it a 13-11 ball game. The Minutemen would score one with 11 seconds left to cut things to one, but Army would close the game out and move to 1-0 on the year.
Next up for the Black Knights is a road trip to face No. 14 Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 pm.
