Niagara Takes Game Two Over Hockey to Earn Series Split
November 09, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (3-6-0, 3-5-0 Atlantic Hockey America) fell by a score of 2-0 in game two of its series with Niagara (5-4-2, 4-2-1 Atlantic Hockey America).
The Purple Eagles netted an empty net goal in the final minutes to bring it to a 2-0 scoreline, as the two goalies in the series, JJ Cataldo and Pierce Charleson, each allowed just one goal across two full games.
Cataldo made 30 saves tonight after making 39 for the shutout in game one, while Charleson stopped all 38 shots he faced to earn the shutout for Niagara.
Army's 38 shots on goal marked a season-high as Niagara logged 32 on the night. Army has now evenly split three of its first four conference series this season.
The game almost mirrored the series opener on Friday night where Adam Marshall's goal at the 10:50 mark of the first period was the decider, as Jay Ahearn put Niagara ahead at the 10:19 mark in the first which proved the game-winner and only goal for over 58 and a half minutes of play.
The Black Knights had four power-play opportunities but were unable to capitalize, including two in the third period within short order after ending the final 1:48 of the second with a man advantage.
Andrew Gilbert chipped in four blocked shots to pace the Black Knights while both Barron Woodring and Nik Hong controlled the faceoff dot. Woodring won 15 of 22 draws while Hong came away with 13 of 21.
Army will return for a road series at RIT next Friday and Saturday with six more points on the line.
