November 15, 2024 | Hockey
ROCHESTER, NY - Army West Point hockey (4-6-0, 4-5-0 Atlantic Hockey America) picked up a 5-1 win at RIT (3-8-0, 2-4-0 Atlantic Hockey America) on Friday night from the Gene Polisseni Center.
Plebe Adam Marshall scored two goals to lead the Black Knights as senior Hunter McCoy and sophomore Jon Bell also posted multi-point efforts. Bell's two assists marked the first points in his collegiate career.
Plebe goaltender JJ Cataldo continued his dominant start with a 19-save effort allowing just the one goal. Cataldo has now allowed just six goals through his first five career starts.
Brent Keefer, Mac Gadowsky and McCoy each logged goals in the contest as the five scores marked a season-high for the Black Knights. Army outshot RIT 36-20 in the effort.
Army got off to a dream start with Marshall opening the scoring just 127 seconds into the game. It was an unassisted effort as Marshall intercepted an errant pass behind the Tigers' net and made his move to then beat Jakub Krbecek in the RIT goal to put Army ahead.
RIT answered immediately with a goal from Simon Isabelle, but Army continued to put the pressure on in the defensive zone for the Tigers.Â
The Black Knights got back ahead midway through the frame with an entry pass from Joey Baez finding Nik Hong on the rush who slid the puck over to Keefer who tucked away his second goal of the season. Army scored twice in the opening 11 minutes of the series after scoring just one goal this past weekend in the Niagara series.
Gadowsky then got his first goal of the year on a deflection off a Tiger skate in front to put Army ahead 3-1 through the opening period. Army outshot the Tigers 13-6 in the first frame.
Army had 1:38 of a five-on-three beginning in the first minute of the third but was unable to capitalize despite testing Krbecek multiple times. It was a fourth even strength goal of the game with just under six minutes left in the second which gave Army a commanding lead. Marshall slammed home his second of the game off an inch-perfect pass from McCoy from behind the net to give the Black Knights breathing room.Â
Entering the third period outshooting the home side 27-13, Army kept the pressure on and controlled the majority of the final frame. Cataldo stopped everything in sight with McCoy then netting his first goal of the campaign at the 11:48 mark as Bell placed another perfect pass right to the stick in front for McCoy to put the finishing touches on the game.
Hong and Barron Woodring continued to fare well in the faceoff circle, as Hong won 12 of 19 draws with Woodring coming away with 11 of 19.Â
The two sides mill meet again for game two on Saturday with puck drop once again set for 7:00 p.m. as Army will look for its first sweep of the season.
