WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (5-7-0, 5-6-0 Atlantic Hockey America) fell by a score of 5-3 to Holy Cross (5-8-1, 4-4-1 Atlantic Hockey America) on Friday night from Tate Rink.
Army battled back from three goals down in the third period to make it a one-goal game but an empty net goal from the Crusaders capped the 5-3 victory.
All three of Army's goals came courtesy of its fourth line with plebe Jack Ivey having a hand in all three including his first career goal.Â
Mac Gadowsky logged a goal and assist to continue his hot stretch while Pierce Patterson recorded his first career multi-assist effort with a pair of primary helpers. JJ Cataldo made 23 saves in net for the Black Knights.
The game was filled with stoppages and penalties with a total of 73 penalty minutes altogether between the teams. Army had one successful offsides challenge on a goal that would've given Holy Cross a 2-0 advantage but a second challenge for goaltender's interference was unsuccessful on the Crusaders' eventually second goal of the contest.
Holy Cross dominated the opening portion of the game, outshooting Army 13-3 in the opening frame. Cataldo withstood the early flurry, before surrendering the game's opening goal in the final minute of the first period.
The Crusaders began the second period with a five minute power-play following an Army major before the opening faceoff, but Army's kill was strong and kept the game at 1-0.Â
Later on in the period, Army knotted the score at one through Nils Forselius who tucked home a rebound off a Pierce Patterson shot which was saved.
After a scramble in front of Cataldo with 1:01 to play in the second, the puck found the back of the net through John Gelatti to restore the lead for the visitors heading into the third period.
Holy Cross kept the pressure on in the third, scoring twice to extend the lead to 4-1 heading into the final ten minutes of the game. Army would not go down quietly however, getting two quickfire goals to make it a one-goal game with over 4:30 remaining.Â
The first came via Jack Ivey netting his first Army goal with Gadowsky providing the primary assist, as Ivey would then return the favor with Gadowksy scoring his fourth goal in his last three games to make it a 4-3 contest.
Army's surge was unable to find a fourth goal, with Liam McLinskey finding the back of the empty net to secure the 5-3 win.
Army was outshot 28-22 in the game while winning 35 of 64 faceoffs. Ben Ivey paced the centers with 10 wins at the dot on 14 draws.
The Black Knights will return for a road matchup with Stonehill on Tuesday with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m.
