October 31, 2024 | Hockey
BUFFALO, NY - Army West Point hockey (2-4-0, 2-3-0 AHA) fell in the series opener at Canisius (2-6-0, 2-0-0 AHA) by a score of 4-0 on Thursday night.
JJ Cataldo made 21 saves in net for Army but the offense stalled and was not able to beat Ethan Robertson on the night who earned the shutout for Canisius.
Canisius took a lead with its first shot of the game on a break less than 100 seconds in as Michael Colella netted his first Canisius goal as the Golden Griffins would never look back after going ahead.Â
Army had the majority of the chances in the first but Canisius found the second goal of the game with less than 100 seconds left in the frame, opening and closing the period with a goal.
Oliver Tarr then took advantage of an Army giveaway and deposited the third goal of the game just over three minutes into the second period, as the Golden Griffins then held a more comfortable 3-0 lead.Â
The Black Knights got a pair of power-play chances in the latter half of the second frame but where unable to convert as Robertson stood tall in goal for the home side with an eventual 26 saves to pick up his second win of the season.
Army had a lifeline midway through the third period with another power-play chance, but were unable to capitalize and evetnually pulled Cataldo to set up an empty net goal from Canisius.
Army slightly outshot Canisius 26-25 and won the faceoff battle, 24-21, but were unable to find the back of the net for the first time this season.
The two teams will return tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. for the series finale.
