Women's Soccer Downs Colgate 3-0 on Road; Clinches Hosting Duties in Postseason
October 26, 2024 | Women's Soccer
HAMILTON, NY - Army West Point women's soccer (11-4-1, 5-2-1 Patriot League) used three first half goals to take down Colgate (5-9-3, 3-3-2 Patriot League) on a brisk afternoon in central New York.
The win clinched a top-three seed for the Black Knights in the Patriot League Tournament with all three seeds still in play for Army's postseason scenarios. It also guaranteed that Army will host at least one postseason match, marking the third straight season in which there has been playoff soccer at Malek Stadium.
Sage Strohman notched her seventh shutout of the season while making five saves including a penalty kick in the second half. It marked her 26th career shutout, moving her into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time list.
Brigid Duffy, Kaelan Bradley and Hannah Pohlidal each tabbed goals for Army with Grace Edvalds, Grace Pohlidal and Sabrina Rogers logging assists.
The game's opening goal came in the 22nd minute from a brilliant solo effort from Duffy after Grace Pohlidal fed her just outside the box. Duffy spun off her defender and fired in her sixth goal of the season across goal with a left-footed strike.
Bradley doubled the lead ten minutes later after a blistering run from Grace Edvalds down the right flank in the build up. Edvalds took a Keira Vesy pass down to the touchline before taking the space into the box and crossing in to a crashing Bradley, who did not let Duffy sit alone with the team lead in goals for long as she notched her sixth of the campaign. Duffy and Bradley are the only pair of teammates in the conference to each have contributed .9 points per game or better.
Army's dream first half continued as Rogers fed Hannah Pohlidal in the box after Duffy intercepted an errant Raiders' pass. Pohlidal took a touch and fired in from close range to give the Black Knights a 3-0 halftime lead.
Colgate had a lifeline back into the game less than ten minutes into the second half as Army conceded a penalty. After making two saves in the first half, Strohman was up to the task to keep the clean sheet and made the save on the penalty effort from Ari Bezanson.
Army kept its composure with its multi-goal lead in the second half, eventually outshooting Colgate 14-11 on the way to a 3-0 victory.
The win was Army's first in Hamilton since the 2011 season, having snapped a six-game losing streak in road matches against the Raiders.
The three-goal effort also marked the first time since 2005 in which the program has scored at least three times in six different games.
Army will take on Boston University next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Boston to conclude the regular season in a pivotal matchup for postseason seeding. Both teams currently stand with 16 points through eight conference games, with Bucknell topping the table at 18 points.
