Air Force Takes Game One in Series Against Hockey

WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (7-16-1, 5-11-1 Atlantic Hockey) fell by a score of 8-1 in game one a two-game set against Air Force (12-12-1, 9-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) on Friday night from Tate Rink.
Army fired a season-high 41 shots on goal in the contest, as Guy Blessing was up to the task all night for the Falcons, making 40 saves in total.
The Black Knights were snakebitten on the power-play, surrendering a pair of shorthanded goals in the first period as Air Force got out to an early lead.
The first goal of the game came on the power-play for the the Falcons, as Luke Rowe finished off a feed from Will Gavin to beat Evan Szary in the Army goal. Clayton Cosentino doubled the lead a the 12:31 mark of the period, with an unassisted shorthanded tally on a breakaway following an Army turnover at the blue line.
The freshman line of Jake Hewitt, Nik Hong and Vincent Salice quickly got Army back within a goal as Hong delivered a cross-ice pass to Salice who deposited his third of the campaign. Army went to the power-play immediately following the goal, as Air Force struck again shorthanded as Austin Schwartz buried an unassisted chance on another breakaway. Army's 17 shots on goal were a season-high for any period, but the Black Knights faced an uphill battle, trailing 3-1 after one.
A penalty as time expired in the first saw Army begin the second with a full power-play, but the Air Force PK continued to dominate the game as Army was without its leading power-play goal scorer in Joey Baez. Parker Brown netted his fourth of the season at the 12:44 mark to make it a 4-1 game, as the Falcons then got their fifth goal in the final minute of the frame just two seconds after Brown came out of the box, for a power-play goal in the box score but a four-on-four goal on the ice.
Gavin Abric entered in net for Army to begin the third, making nine saves in total as Air Force added three goals. Mason McCormick got his fourth of the campaign while Rowe added another power-play tally to his ledger. The final score ended up 8-1 after a goal in the final minute from Jacob Marti, as Army eventually outshot the Falcons 41-39.
Army will return for game two tomorrow, with puck drop set for 4:00 p.m. on the YES Network and FloHockey.
