GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The Army West Point golf team began its 2023 fall season on Monday at the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Club.

The Black Knights finished the first round of the three-day tournament in the 17th spot on the leaderboard with a team score of 314 (+30). South Carolina has the lead after day one at 2-under par as a team. Nick Mathews of NC State is atop of the player leaderboard with an opening round 67 (-4).

TOURNAMENT NOTES
• John Heckel Jr. leads the way for the Black Knights with an opening round 72 (+1) and currently sits in a tie for 20th on the player leaderboard.
• Heckel Jr. had four birdies during his round, including three in the final nine holes.
• He had two birdies in his final four holes.
• Golf great Jack Nicklaus was on hand this week as he welcomed the teams to American Dunes on Sunday.
• Today's round and the final two rounds will be live on the Golf Channel and on Peacock streaming service.

The Black Knights tee off at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday to start round two with South Carolina and Arizona.
