Coach's Corner
"We were good today but not good enough to win. We knew that we could score well in a lot of areas and we had high hopes of closing the gap on first place but in the end we came up short. In a normal year you need to score 7-8 points out of every athlete that you bring to the meet. This year that number was over 9 points per athlete. We had quality performances yesterday and today but not enough depth. The team runner-up finish should not take away from the individual accomplishments that we had today. We set new all-time best marks and we had gritty competitive efforts in a lot of events. Our lone win today came in the 3000m steeplechase which was the first running event of the day. Nathan Davis sat in my office in January of 2022 as a senior in high school and inquired about the possibility of joint our team in the fall. I told him I wasn't sure that he was good enough to make our team and that I needed to see some improvement for him to get on the roster. He asked what he needed to do to get on our team and I gave him some performance targets. Â Then he went home, trained hard and hit the targets. Fast forward to today and he was on podium of his first Patriot League championship. The race started out fast and I cautioned him to be patient but he felt good so he stayed up front and kept driving the pace down. He led for 6 of the 7.5 laps and then two Navy runners slipped past him. At that point I wasn't certain that he could respond to the challenge given how hard he had been pushing but he stuck right on those guys. He regained the lead going into the last water jump and then sprinted to the line narrowly holding off a late charge. It was the first Patriot League win for an Army man in the steeple since Tommy Girardot in 2015. Nathan's winning time was a new personal best (8:52.67) and he now ranks among the top 25 performers in the East region. I can't recall a plebe doing the kind of running that we are seeing from this young man. Â He is just scratching the surface of his potential and his title today was a big breakthrough performance and set the tone for our team heading into the rest of the day. In the end, I thought the guys did well today. We got a lot out of this roster and the results were a good representation of how hard these young men have worked this year." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
