May 06, 2023 | Men's Track and Field
BETHLEHEM, PA - Army West Point men's track & field sits in second-place after day one of the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, hosted by Lehigh University.
Army collected victories in three events total, winning both throwing events while also winning the 4x800 relay.
Chris Barrett threw a career-best 71.66m in the javelin throw to give Army its first win of the day. Parker Brosious joined Barrett on the podium with a third-place finish with his 63.82m distance.
Cam Smith continued the dominance from Army's throwers with a win in the hammer throw. Smith bested the competition by over a meter with his new personal-best mark of 67.56m.
Army's 4x800 relay team of Kasen Jeitz, Jeremiah Rasmussen, Luke Griner and Mitchell Burr secured the final win of the day for Army, with a time of 7:27.46.

Coach's Corner
"We were good today, much better than I had anticipated. We had 3 wins and we knew coming into the meet that we had some events where we needed to be at our best just to advance to the finals tomorrow and that is what happened. We also had some events where we were strong and I expected us to shine, and we did that too. We were particularly good in the throwing events. There were 4 throwing events today. 2 on the women's side and 2 on the men's side and we won them all. Chris Barrett got us going early by winning the javelin with a new personal best 71.66 meters (235' 1") and Parker Brosius was solid in finishing 3rd. Those two firsties have had outstanding careers for us and it was great to see both of them on the podium together in their last conference championship. Our other throws win came from Cameron Smith in the hammer. Cam's winning mark 67.56 meters (221' 8") was a new personal best for him and easily outdistanced the rest of the competitors. We expected Cam to win and I know he expected to win but you still have to go out there and prove it and he did it convincingly. His rise to the top of our league has been a story of resilience and determination. Cameron was a walk on to our team and had never competed in the hammer prior to coming to USMAPS. We got lucky in identifying him but his success has had nothing to do with luck. He works hard and he is a great competitor. He earned every bit of today's win and I hope he continues to climb the ladder of success at the NCAA level. Our other win today came in the 4 x 800 relay which was the last event of the day. We have the two best 800 meter runners in the conference on our roster; Luke Griner and Mitchell Burr. Griner has the titles and times (1:48.00) to back up that claim and Burr has the best finishing speed of anyone in the conference and is dangerous in any situation requiring a kick. After watching the qualifying today, I decided to put our plebe on the leadoff (Kasen Jeitz) because I wanted to let our opponents run away from us early and then we could expect to hunt them down over the course of the next three legs. I put Griner 2nd so that if we were behind, we could expect to catch up by the 2nd exchange. And I knew if things went according to plan, we would have Mitchell Burr sitting in the catbird seat on the shoulder of the leader with 200 meters to go and there is no one in the conference that has an answer for Mitchell Burr in that situation. That is exactly what happened. Mitchell patiently waited until the last turn and then blasted by the Navy runner and cruised to the win. It was a satisfying conclusion to a strong day of qualifying for our men's team. We have a lot of potential to score points tomorrow and if we race as well as we did today and we are competent in the field events, we will have a strong team finish." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
