May 06, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
BOSTON, MA. – The Army West Point men's lacrosse team will be playing on Championship Sunday for the sixth time in the last eight years with a Patriot League Tournament (2020 canceled due to COVID-19) after a dominating 19-13 win over Lehigh in the Patriot League Semifinals.
Army's 19 goals were the most a team has ever scored in the Patriot League Tournament and Paul Johnson's six goals tied the Patriot League Tournament record.
Army took a 2-0 lead within the first minute of the game after Eamon Murphy scored his second goal of the year and Evan Plunkett got going to go up by two.
Lehigh would end up tying things up at two and then again at three shortly after Johnson scored his first of the night.
The Black Knights would begin to separate after that Lehigh goal, however. Six of the next seven goals were for Army. Reese Burek scored twice, Jacob Morin, Dawson Clark, Gunnar Fellows, and Plunkett as scored once during the run to give Army 9-4 lead with 12:33 remaining.
Shortly after two Lehigh goals to make it a 9-6 game, Army rattled off another 3-0 run to go into the break up 12-6.
The Mountain Hawks would win the third quarter 3-0 to attempt to get back into the ball game making the score 12-9.
Paul Johnson would make sure they only got as close as three after rattling off two goals to put Army back up five.
After two more Lehigh goals, it was Bailey O'Connor's turn to score to go back up 15-11.
Johnson would net two more and Morin would score another. The last Army goal came from Brayden Duncan who scored his first goal of the year and the first of his career.
Before the game, the matchup between Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year Mike Sisselberger and Will Coletti, was really hyped up. Coletti got the better of the Lehigh senior going 19-34 in the circle.
Johnson's six goals were the most scored by an Army player this season.
The Black Knights now turn their attention to Loyola who they will face in the Patriot League Championship Game. The matchup will be at noon on Sunday and will air on CBS Sports Network.
