Brigid Duffy Named Patriot League Rookie of the Year; Michelle Tumolo Earns Coach of the Year, Six Black Knights Claim All-League Honors

BETHLEHEM, PA - Army West Point women's lacrosse sees a pair of Patriot League major award winners and a program-record six athletes named to the conference's all-league team, announced today by the league. Freshman Brigid Duffy was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year, while also garnering first team all-league honors. Head Coach Michelle Tumolo was named Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading Army to a (14-2, 8-1 Patriot League) record this regular season.
Seniors Kathleen Sullivan, Julia Franzoni and Jolie Riedell each joined Duffy on the All-Patriot League first team, while junior Julia Gorajek and senior Cathleen Parker claimed second team honors. The
Army second-year head coach Michelle Tumolo was named Patriot League Coach of the Year, becoming the first Army coach to claim the award in program history. Tumolo posted a 12-6 record in 2022 in her first season at the helm of the Black Knights, leading Army to its first ever victory over Navy and first ever win over a ranked opponent. Entering her second season, Army took another huge leap forward, breaking into the national rankings for the first time in program history three weeks into the season. This came after the Black Knights knocked off 19th-ranked Jacksonville on the road on Feb. 16 and defeated No. 9 Rutgers at home on Feb. 25. Army got out to an 11-0 start overall, ranking as high as 13th in the ILWomen/IWLCA poll. The 11-game winning streak also marked a new program-best. Army went on to defeat Navy for the second consecutive season in its star series matchup, before finishing the season with an 8-1 mark in conference play and 14-2 record overall. The 14 wins matches the highest-win total for the program (2019), as Army secured the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will play a semifinal matchup against Navy on Thursday.
Brigid Duffy, Midfield, Freshman (Queensbury, NY / Queensbury)
Brigid Duffy earns Patriot League Rookie of the Year after leading the conference in goals (50) and goals per game (3.13) through the regular season. Duffy burst onto the scene for the Black Knights in the midfield, winning the conference's Rookie of the Week honor on five occasions throughout the season, along with a Midfielder of the Week nod. In addition to her goal-scoring prowess, Duffy was all over the field for the Black Knights, also ranking in the top-ten in the league in ground balls with 31 and draw controls with 74. She also led the Black Knights in caused turnovers with 15, and was instrumental in Army's clearing efforts throughout the season. With her 50 goals, she ranked second in the country in goals among freshmen. Duffy scored five times with two assists in its win at #19 Jacksonville before going on to pour in a career-best seven goals in Army's 17-15 win over Boston University. Duffy becomes the second Black Knight to take home the award after Caroline Raymond did so in 2019.
Kathleen Sullivan, Attack, Senior (Annapolis, MD / South River)
Army senior captain Kathleen Sullivan led the Black Knights attack throughout the season, leading the team with 73 points through 33 goals and 40 assists. Sullivan became the program's all-time points leader with 164th career point which she logged on her senior day against Bucknell on April 8th. Last season, she the single-season points record with 77, and will attempt to eclipse that mark in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. Sullivan ranked second in the conference in both points and assists, while scoring 20 goals with 22 assists in her nine Patriot League contests. She dominated multiple games for the Black Knights, setting a single-game program record with seven assists at Holy Cross while adding three goals in the victory. She logged a pair of goals and six assists at American, before logging five more assists against No. 13 Yale. Sullivan registered multiple points in every game this season for Army, the only Black Knight to do so. Sullivan earned All-Patriot League second team honors in 2022, and was named Patriot League Attacker of the Week earlier this season.
Julia Franzoni, Attack, Senior (Baldwin, MD / Notre Dame Prep)
Franzoni lands on the All-Patriot League First Team following her breakout senior campaign for the Black Knights. Also operating as Army's draw control specialist, Franzoni ranked second on the Black Knights with 36 goals scored. Her 94 draw controls ranks fourth in the Patriot League and 23rd in the country. She began the season with a single-game program record 14 draw controls against New Hampshire. She scored multiple goals in 13 of 16 games for Army this season, and logged at least three draw controls in every game but one. She deposited a career-high five goals and seven points early in the season against Marist, and ended the season with five straight multi-goal efforts.
Jolie Riedell, Midfield, Senior (San Diego, CA / Scripps Ranch)
Army senior captain Jolie Riedell earns her second-straight All-Patriot League first team honor. Riedell poured in 25 goals this season for the Black Knights, while securing 48 draw controls which was third best on the team. Riedell began the season with five straight multi-goal efforts on her way to posting nine such games overall with multiple scores. She scored a season-best four times in Army's win at American, adding an assist and three draw controls in the win. Riedell earned Patriot League Midfielder of the Week earlier this season after helping Army take down a top-ten opponent in Rutgers with a pair of goals and four draw controls.
Julia Gorajek, Attack, Junior (Hightstown, N.J. / The Peddie School)
Julia Gorajek was one of four Black Knights to reach the 30-goal plateau this season, adding 11 assists. She ranked 18th in the conference in goals and scored 17 times in Patriot League contests. She logged multiple goals on ten occasions this season, while making 14 starts on the Black Knights attack. She scordd four times against both Lafayette and Lehigh in the conference, while adding a three-goal effort in Army's win at American. Her 18 ground balls also ranked fourth on the team while her 42 points overall ranked third. This marks consecutive All-League honors for Gorajek after landing on the first team in 2022, as she was also named to the league's Preseason All-League team prior to the season.
Cathleen Parker, Defense, Senior (Bedminster, N.J. / The Pingry School)
Parker claims her first career all-league honor after playing a key role on the Black Knights defense this season. Starting every game, Parker constantly marked top offensive threats from Army's opponents, as the Black Knights allowed the second-fewest goals in the conference this season with 164. Parker led all Army defenders with nine caused turnovers on the year, adding 15 ground balls and ten draw controls. She was at her best in conference play, causing three turnovers in Army's 17-15 win over Boston before causing a pair of turnovers and logging three draw controls in the victory at Lehigh.
Army will take on third-seeded Navy in a Patriot League semifinal at 7:00 p.m. from Baltimore, MD.
