GAINESVILLE, Va. – The Army West Point golf team earned the Commander-in-Chief's Cup after claiming the title over Navy in a playoff in Tuesday's final round.
Â
The Black Knights were crowned champions after Navy closed a nine-shot gap after 36 holes to tie Army with an aggregate score of 1360, representing the best six of eight scores over each three rounds of medal play. The tie breaker used the seventh best score in round three. Air Force finished third with a score of 1373.Â
Â
Keegan Shreeves was the individual champion by five strokes over teammate Chip Deegan. He finished the tournament at 2-over par after a 3-over 75 on Tuesday.
Â
FINAL ROUND NOTES
• Josh Kim led the way over the two-day tournament for the Black Knights and finished in a tie for second at 7-over.
• Kim shot a 4-over 76 on the final day.
• John Heckel Jr. had the best final round with an even par 72 in the final round and improved six shots from his second round.
• Marshall Daniel moved up two spots on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth on the leaderboard after a 3-over 75.
"This means the world," head coach Chad Bagley said. "Coaching at a service academy and coming from a service academy, this is competition in it's truest form. We're so proud of our guys, but also proud because when you beat Navy and Air Force, you beat another group of tough and gritty individuals and it's going to take everything you got and we proved that today and we're grateful to win at the end.
"This is a special competition with special people and we're honored to be here to be a part of it and definitely honored to win the inaugural CIC Cup."
Â
The Black Knights are back in action at the Patriot League Championship on April 28-30 at the Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Md., which will be hosted by Loyola.
