URI Rallies in Late Innings to Defeat Army
March 05, 2023 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Rhode Island rallied in the late innings, manufacturing seven runs over the final three frames, capped by a two-run home seventh, in its 8-7 defeat of the Army West Point softball team Sunday at the Bulls Invitational.
How it Happened
The Black Knights (5-10) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead after two innings. Keyed by a pair of hits in the top of the first, Army plated a run on a wild pitch.
The Rams scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game 1-1, but Army responded with five hits in the second frame, pushing across three runs, to take a 4-1 lead keyed by Angelina Bebek's two-run single to right center field.
URI, who recorded hits in all seven innings, threatened in the third and fourth innings, but came up short leaving a pair of runners on base in each.
The Rams manufactured four runs in the home half of the fifth inning on a pair of timely hits, two walks and a hit batsman to pull ahead 5-4.
That lead proved short-lived as Army responded with a run in the top of the sixth on Brook Mitchell's two-out infield hit chasing Taylor Brown (3x4), who led off with a two-bagger and was sacrificed to second, home to tie the count 5-5.
Trailing 6-5 after six innings, Army recorded a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Brown, who was 3-for-4 on the day, led off with a double, was sacrificed to second and scored on Austin White's infield hit to tie the game 6-6. Pinch runner Maaika Dones scored the go-ahead run on Kayla Edwards' two-out single to right field for a 7-6 Army lead heading into the bottom half.
The Rams took the game from Army, rallying with three straight hits. They pushed across the tying run on a bases-loaded walk and the go ahead on Hannah Hernandez's fielder's choice RBI.
