No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Wins Ninth Straight to Open Season With 12-8 Victory Versus Colgate
March 26, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY - No. 13 Army West Point women's lacrosse (9-0, 3-0 Patriot League) used five fourth quarter goals to take down Colgate (1-7, 0-2 Patriot League) from a rainy Michie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Army outshot Colgate in every quarter, including 16-3 in the first frame and 10-4 in the fourth. The Black Knights fired ten or more shots in every quarter of the game.
Brigid Duffy and Julia Franzoni paced the Army offensive effort, each scoring three times while combining for 11 of Army's 15 draw controls. Lacey Bartholomay made 11 stops on 19 shots faced for the Black Knights, including four saves on five free-position attempts from the Raiders.
Both teams struggled offensively early on, with Colgate taking the first lead of the game at the 11:35 mark. Kathleen Sullivan answered less than 30 seconds after, taking a feed from Julia Gorajek and depositing her 21st goal of the campaign. The teams would trade empty trips and turnovers over the next 11+ minutes of game time, with Army getting a free-position attempt in the closing seconds. Utilizing every second on the clock, Duffy passed up the shot and layed off the Marissa Massey who fired in to give the Black Knights a 2-1 lead after one.
The harsh conditions continued to impair both sides' attack, with both teams missing the target with mulitple attempts. Franzoni eventually netted her first of the game after spinning off a defender, with Duffy scoring her first of the game soon after to extend Army's lead to 4-1. Colgate responded, shutting out the Black Knights for the final 9:35 of the half. The Raiders were able to put two past Bartholomay in the quarter, as Army held a narrow 4-3 lead at the break. Bartholomay made six saves on nine shot attempts through the opening half hour.
The teams continued to battle in the third quarter, with Colgate tying the game up before Carleigh Armstrong gave Army back its lead with a free-position goal at the 10:13 mark of the third. Franzoni then buried the next two for Army, including a free-position score which eventually made it a 7-5 Army lead. Colgate answered with its lone free-position score of the game at the 5:12 mark, refusing to go away. After a couple of big saves from Bartholomay, Army took a 7-6 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Army's draw control took over to open the fourth, winning the first five of the frame to set the tone. Jolie Riedell scored a pair of huge unassisted goals to kickstart Army's offense, with the second giving Army a 9-7 advantage with 9:12 to play in the game. After the Raiders made it 9-8 with exactly eight minutes to play, Army dominated the final half of the fourth to ensure the victory. Duffy notched her second of the game on Army' s next possession, making it a two-goal lead once again.
Bartholomay protected the lead with a pair of saves, including her fourth on a free-position shot with 3:38 left. Duffy made good on securing her sixth consecutive hat trick with a goal in the final three minutes to ice the game for the Black Knights. Duffy secured the ensuing draw control, which allowed Sullivan to log her second of the game with Gorajek tabbing another assist. Army maintained its lead in the Patriot League, becoming the first team to three wins while remaining of three undefeated teams left in the country.
