March 18, 2023 | Men's Tennis
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point men's tennis (10-8, 1-0 Patriot League) rallied for a 4-3 victory over Drexel (4-8, 0-1 CAA) from Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Playing in its first home match in over a month, Jake Huarte and Samuel Eden clinched the match for Army with third-set singles victories.
The Black Knights secured the doubles point handily, with all three duos looking the part. A.J. Woodman and Thomas Lake picked up a (6-3) victory on court one while Vishnu Bodavula and Samuel Eden also logged a (6-3) win on court two. Nathan Jose and Jake Huarte saw their match suspended while holding a (5-2) advantage.
Woodman carried over his success into his singles matchup, registering a (6-3, 6-3) win for the Black Knights on court one. With only one other singles court going two sets, Army eventually found itself down 3-2 with Huarte and Eden left on the courts. Eden secured a second set tiebreak win to force a third-set against Drexel's Alex De Soussa.
Huarte played his best tennis in the third set, rolling to an eventual (7-5, 4-6, 6-1) victory to even the team score at three. With set three knotted at one in Eden's matchup, he was able to get the important break and then hold serve to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Eventually serving for the match up 5-4, Eden got out to a 40-0 advantage and clinched on the second match point of the thriller to give Army the victory.

Coach's Corner
"I was looking forward to seeing where we were at as a team after spring break, at times teams take awhile to wake up but what we did best was the way that the boys brought energy, fight and understanding the moment. As individuals we were willing to recognize the moment, hang around when we were facing a push back from Drexel and let the whole team rally around each other. The tennis wasn't as sharp as I had hoped but the will to win pushed us through each finish line. A good day for the program and we look forward to waking up tomorrow morning and doing it all over again." - head coach Randy Rowley.
