Women’s Lacrosse Defeats #19 Jacksonville on Road for Historic Victory, 12-10
February 16, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
JACKSONVILLE, FL – Army West Point women's lacrosse (2-0, 0-0 PL) knocked off No. 19 Jacksonville (0-3, 0-0 ASUN) by a score of 12-10, marking the highest ranked opponent defeated in program history.
Lacey Bartholomay set a program record with 19 saves in the Army goal, making nine saves through an offensive onslaught in the first period from the Dolphins. Army fell behind 2-0 early but was able to quickly adjust on the defensive end to limit Jacksonville to just five goals in each half.
Army freshman Brigid Duffy had a coming out party, scoring five total goals, including both of Army's goals in the fourth quarter which proved to be the game-winners. The five goals tied the most ever by an Army freshman in a game. Duffy had gotten the Black Knights on the board with a highlight reel goal in the first period after Army went scoreless through the opening 12 and a half minutes.
Julia Franzoni capped the first quarter with a goal to make it a 2-2 game through 15 minutes of play. The Army offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring six goals in the frame which matched its total across the other three. Jolie Riedell fired her first of the game off a free position attempt, while Carleigh Armstrong took a feed from Meghan Pedrani to give Army a 4-3 lead with 10:28 to play in the half.
Less than a minute later, Duffy and Kathleen Sullivan netted quick scores for the Black Knights, who doubled up on the Dolphins with a 6-3 lead. Bartholomay continued to make key stops for Army, eventually going into halftime with 13 saves. This time ending the second quarter with a goal, Franzoni netted two across the final 3:30 to secure a first half hat trick and give Army an 8-5 advantage at the break.
A defensive battle broke out in the second half, with each team collecting just one goal through the opening 11 minutes. Army's coming from Duffy, and Jacksonville's from Brianna Samuels. With the next goal proving pivotal, Madison Warne found Riedell from behind the net for an easy score to give Army breathing room and a 10-6 lead. The Dolphins answered late in the frame, and Army took a 10-7 lead into the final quarter.
Army's offense stalled, going scoreless through the opening ten minutes. Jacksonville was able to claw back with a couple of goals during the stretch, eventually seeing a free position attempt with a chance to tie the score at ten with 5:10 to play. Bartholomay made the biggest save of the night on the play, also her 19th stop which broke Maddie Burns program record of 18 (4-21-18 vs. Boston).
Army quickly responded on its ensuing possession with another goal from Duffy to make it a two-goal game. Franzoni grabbed a key draw control which allowed the Black Knights to drain the clock to under three to go, eventually coming up empty handed. Jacksonville scored with 1:59 to play to make it a one-goal game at 11-10. After a key draw control from Riedell, Army saw itself with a free position attempt with a minute to go. Going for the shot attempt and dagger, Duffy, who was cold-blooded all night, buried it to give Army a 12-10 victory on the road.
The win marked Army's second ever victory over a ranked opponent, with both now coming under second year head coach Michelle Tumolo (4-23-22 at #24 Navy).
