WEST POINT, NY – Army West Point women's lacrosse (3-0, 0-0 Patriot League) dominated from the opening draw to defeat Marist (0-2, 0-0 MAAC) by a score of 21-5 on Wednesday afternoon.
The snow was falling at Michie Stadium as the Black Knights jumped out to a 15-0 first half advantage. Julia Franzoni scored five times in the opening half, as Army eventually saw 11 different goal scorers by the game's end. Army fired 28 shots on goal compared to the Red Foxes' 13 while draw controls were fairly even, 14-13 in favor of Army.
Julia Gorajek got the scoring started for Army, spinning off a defender and firing home with a head of steam. Jolie Riedell tucked home the next two, with the first tally off a free-position shot as Army was in control early on.
Army's defense was able to suffocate Marist in its early possessions, forcing ten turnovers in the first quarter while allowing just three shots. Franzoni quarterbacked the offense off the draw, featuring a pair of assists to Kathleen Sullivan to go along with two goals as Army held a 7-0 advantage through the opening 15 minutes.
With the snow still falling into the second quarter, the Black Knights starting unit continued to dominate on both ends, with Franzoni and Sullivan at the forefront. Franzoni secured her hat trick less than a minute in, before Sullivan logged back-to-back helpers to Carleigh Armstrong and Gabby Mirak for their first goals of the game. Franzoni netted two more soon after, the first off a good feed from Brigid Duffy and the second in transition off an outlet pass from Sidney Weigand.
Army led 13-0 with 5:13 to go in the half, setting up a running clock for the majority of the game as Marist continued to fail to breakthrough the stiff Army defense. Gorajek and Marissa Massey added scores before the end of the half, as Marist got on the board in the final minute to mark a 15-1 scoreline at the break. Lacey Bartholomay had little to do in the half, ceding the remainder of the game to Lindsey Serafine and Sherry Feng.
With the weather calming down towards the start of the second halftime, suffocating defense in the midfield and defensive third was the story. Army added four goals in the first ten minutes of the half, with Riedell securing her third and Sullivan adding her second. Madison Warne and Duffy logged unassisted tallies. Marist had its share of chances as the game opened up, with Serafine making five stops in an impressive showing from the freshman. With a plethora of Cadets mixing in the fourth quarter, Sarah Chernik was involved in both of Army's fourth quarter goals as she logged her first career goal before assisting Elizabeth Schmutz on her first tally.
