Black Knights Split Day 2; Defeat Buffalo, Fall to Jacksonville State

Jacksonville, Ala. – Army West Point softball returned to the field Saturday playing a doubleheader vs. Buffalo and Jacksonville State. The Black Knights defeated Buffalo 11-9 and fell to Jacksonville State 11-3.
GAME 1 vs. Buffalo: After a scoreless first inning, the Black Knights scored first with Lauren Little stealing home off a Buffalo error. Army extended its lead off a single from Ellie Caldwell making it a 2-0 game. In the bottom of the second inning, Buffalo cut Army's lead to one run after Brianna Caster hit a solo home run.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Bulls extended its lead after Julia Tarantino singled, bringing Alexis Lucyshyn and Madison Fernimen across the plate, giving Buffalo a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Buffalo extended its lead with a solo homerun from Fernimen. In the fifth inning, the Bulls added onto the lead with Brianna Castro hitting into fielder's choice sending Kate Vara in to score, making it a 5-2 game.
Army started the comeback in the top of the sixth inning with Alicyn Grete scoring off of a single by Mikayla Klepfer, making it a 5-3 game. The Black Knights struck again with Taylor Brown scoring off of an error to make it a one run game. Going into the top of the seventh inning, Kayla Edwards scored off a passed ball, tying the ball game.
Lauren Little gave the Black Knights their first lead since the bottom of the third inning after reaching home on a wild pitch. Army extended its lead with Mia Bonsignore scoring off an error committed by Brianna Castro. It became an 8-5 game when Caldwell scored after Bebek grounded out. Kaci Edwards reached home, expanding the Black Knights lead when scoring off a single by Maddie Wilkes. Taylor Brown's single brought Wilkes across the plate. Army ended the inning with an 11-5 lead.
Buffalo responded in the bottom of the eighth inning with Lyla Ambrose scoring off a single by Abbey Nagel. The Bulls cut the Black Knights lead to three runs after Alexis Lucyshyn hit a double to left field sending Fernimen and Nagel across the plate. Buffalo added another run after a single by Tianna Williams, bringing Lucyshyn home. Army defeated Buffalo 11-9 in eight innings.
Taylor Brown went 2-3 today with 2 hits, 1 run, and 1 RBI.
Ellie Caldwell went 2-4 with 2 hits, and an RBI.
GAME 2 vs. Jacksonville State: In the bottom of the first, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks got on the board with Emma Jones after Morgan Nowakowski walked forcing the run in. In the bottom of the second, Jacksonville extended their lead when Sydney Wagnon scored off an error, Emma Jones advanced to third again off an error. With a single by Lauren Hunt, Jones scored making it a 3-0 game.
Army got on the board making it a one run game when Kaci Donaldson hit a 2-run home run. In the bottom of the third, the Gamecocks responded with a 2-run homer by Linley Tubbs, making it a 5-2 game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jacksonville's Holly Stewart hit a double sending Brantly Bonds across the plate. The Gamecocks further extended their lead with a three-run home run by Abbi Perkins, making it a 9-2 game.
Jacksonville's Sydney Wagnon scored for the Gamecocks after a throwing error by Army. At the top of the fifth, Army's Lauren Little singled to center field bringing Angelina Bebek home. Jacksonville ended the bottom of the fifth inning with Ashley Phillips scoring off a fly ball by Stewart. The Black Knights fell to the Gamecocks 11-3 in five innings.
