Consaul Picks Up First Coaching Win; Softball Goes 1-1 to Start New Season

Jacksonville, AL – Army West Point Softball kicked off its season on Friday playing a doubleheader vs. Buffalo and Jacksonville State.
Army saw its opening weekend schedule change as it was originally slated to play in Macon, Ga. In a tournament hosted by Mercer. However, inclement weather shifted the team to traveling to Jacksonville, AL to play in a three-team tournament hosted at Jacksonville State between Army, Jacksonville State and Buffalo.
GAME 1 vs. Buffalo: Interim Head Coach Jen Consaul, making her head coaching debut, sent Senior Alicyn Grete out to the mound to start Game One of the season. Grete came out strong, picking up her first win of the season. Pitching a complete game, Grete struck out 11, had six hits, and gave up two runs, by virtue of a solo home run by Buffalo's Abbey Nagel in the top of the fourth and an unearned run.
Army scored first in the bottom of the first inning as Alicyn Grete scored on a wild pitch after getting on by a leadoff single.
Army tacked on two more runs to extend its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Julia Farris hit a two-run RBI double, that scored Lauren Little and Taylor Brown.
In the third, Army's Alicyn Grete showcased her stuff, striking out the side. Buffalo also struck out the side, keeping it a 3-0 game.
In the fourth inning, the Bulls made it a two-run game after Abbey Nagel hit a home run to right field.
Army answered back when Taylor Brown connected on Army's first home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 4-1 ballgame.
In the bottom of the fifth, it became a 5-2 game after Brook Mitchell scored off a wild pitch.
Julia Farris went 2-3 with a 2B, 2 RBI. Brown was also 2-3 with a solo home run.
GAME 2 vs Jacksonville State: After a scoreless first inning, the Gamecocks got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning after Caroline Lively hit a triple to right field bringing Linley Tubbs home. In the top of the third inning, Army responded with Grace Snyder scoring off a single from Angelina Bebek.
Both Kayla Edwards and Lauren Little hit singles in the top of the fourth inning but both were left on base. The Gamecocks extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Tubbs hit a single, Morgan Nowakowski scored. Jacksonville scored off a fielding error and a walk making it a 6-1 game.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Army's Maddie Wilkes hit a home run to right field making it a 6-2 game. The Gamecocks scored off an error by the Black Knights at the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Army 7-2
