Swimming Wraps Time in Annapolis at Long Course Time Trials with OT Cut and Seven Academy Records

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Army West Point swim & dive wrapped up its time in Annapolis competing at the Navy Long Course Time Trials on Friday.
There was no team scoring at the meet as Army lined up alongside Navy, Coast Guard, Towson, Loyola Maryland, Howard and George Washington. The Black Knights once again showed improvements across the board, smashing seven new program records bringing the total for the trip to 18.

Returning to Lejeune Hall after an historic meet the night before, the success continued from the very first event for the Black Knights, as Kalvin Hahn posted an Olympic Trial cut time of 4:25.19 in the 400 IM to also set a new program record and win the event. CJ Bernauer had a strong start to his day as well, landing in the top-three with a 4:32.55 mark.
In the opening women's event, Clara Williams came just three-tenths of a second away from breaking her own Academy record in the 200 free, placing second with a time of 2:08.57. Alex Edwards had a medal placement in the 100 back, registering a third-place finish (57.28) while Avery Lord paced the Army women, logging a time of 1:06.13.
Army dominated in the 200 fly, winning both events as Jack Mowery came in with a time of 2:04.52 to lead the field. Melinda Zhang held the top spot on the women's side (2:20.96) while Margaret Kroening placed second to give Army a one-two finish. The 100 breast saw a pair of third-place finishes from the Black Knights, with Catriona Gilmore (1:13.03) and Ryan Durkan (1:03.64) setting the standard for the Army team.
The first-place finishes continued to pour in for the Black Knights, claiming wins in the 100 free through Rea Smith (58.67) and Owen Harlow (51.10). Clara Williams also placed well in the event, tabbing third with a sub-one minute time. Zhang paced Army again in the 100 fly, placing second with a 1:03.72 mark while Riley Groves led the men with a top-five finish (55.64).
Meghan Cole made history in the 1500 free, becoming the first Army women to complete the event, setting the program standard with a time of 18:22.21.
The 200 back saw another Academy Record crumble, as Layne Peterson posted a blazing 2:15.48 to win the event and put her name into the program record book. Joey Kling (2:05.57) placed fourth on the men's side. Sam Wesley had a blistering run in the 200 IM soon after, breaking through with a time of 2:05.04 to set another Academy Record on the weekend for Army while winning the event.
The 200 breast performance will go down as one of the most memorable events for Army this season, breaking the Academy Record on both the men's and women's side. Aurelie Migault continued her dominant season, recording a 2:31.78 mark while Bruce Bannister Jr. came in with a 2:16.33. In addition to setting new program records, each time was good for first place at the meet. Migault's mark was less than a tenth of a second off the Olympic Trial cut time.
Molly Webber took her momentum from Thursday right into her 400 free run, claiming a new program record and the top spot at the meet with a 4:26.83. On the men's side, Wes Tate made sure to keep the winning streak going for the Black Knights, coming in first with a time of 3:59.90. In the 50 free, Rea Smith logged a 26.56 mark to give Army another individual event victory, with Ben Vorthmann pacing the men with a third-place showing (23.46).
Ian Tansill also came within half a second of setting another program-best mark in the 800 free, cruising to a victory with his time of 8:19.36.
Army will look to continue its historic season following the holiday break, returning to action at home against Penn State on Friday, January 12th from Crandall Pool.
