Women's Soccer Beats Colgate 1-0 to Advance to Patriot League Championship Game
November 02, 2023 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point women's soccer is Championship Sunday bound after a massive 1-0 win over six-seed Colgate on Thursday night at Malek Stadium.
In the first half, Army was able to sustain pressure early and often. The Black Knights racked up nine total shots in the first 45 minutes.
Colgate had one solid chance the entire game and it came in the 30th minute when the Raiders had multiple looks at goal but all of them were blocked away by Army defenders and the last was saved by a diving Sage Strohman to keep them off the board.
The Army pressure persisted in the second half where the Cadets racked another nine shots. Jasmine Talley had a great look that she put just a hair wide of the frame in the 59th minute. Brigid Duffy fired one on frame in the 71st but the Raider keeper was able to make the stop.
In the 78th minute Duffy did what she has done all season long. Come in clutch. She took a pass from Madison Niebish and went five hole on the Colgate keeper to give the Black Knights a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. It was her team-high seventh goal of the year and her second career game winning goal.
Strohman was flawless in net yet again, making two saves on the day for her eighth shutout of the season which is now tied for the most in the Patriot League. She lowered her overall goals against average to just 0.95 and her GAA in conference play to just 0.60 which is the best in the league.
Army will now take on Bucknell in the Patriot League Championship Game on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Malek Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon and the game will air on CBS Sports Network.
This will be the fourth time in the last 379 days these two squads have faced off and a rematch of last year's championship game where Bucknell won in PKs 3-1 after a 0-0 draw at Malek Stadium. In the 2022 regular season, the two battled to a 0-0 draw at Bucknell. This season, the Black Knights won 3-1 at home with goals from Brigid Duffy, Madison Niebish, and Jasmine Talley.
