Women's Soccer Bows Out in the Patriot League Championship Game in PKs
November 05, 2023 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team's season came to a heartbreaking end after falling to Bucknell 0 (3)-0 (4) in penalty kicks in the Patriot League Championship Game.
Army dominated possession from the very beginning of the game, they brought the pressure to the Bison right away. They fired off 14 shots in the first half of the game but none were able to find the back of the net.
Bucknell had seven shots going into the break but they also didn't find the net.
The second half was the exact same story, neither team found the go-ahead goal despite constant Army pressure. The Black Knights would come mere centimeters from winning in regulation when a Brigid Duffy shot skirted along the goal line and then a Jasmine Talley rebound did the exact same thing just seconds later in the 89th minute.
Shots were 12-6 in favor of Army in the second half but the game would head to overtime.
In the two extra frames shots were even 4-4 but the 0-0 score would hold and the game would advance to PKs for the second consecutive season.
In the PKs the Bison would win 4-3 to win the conference title.
Sage Strohman was brilliant again in net, making seven saves to earn her ninth shutout of the season. She finishes the season with a goals against average of just 0.89 overall and 0.55 against Patriot League opponents. 0.89 is the eighth best GAA in program history. Nine clean sheets is the most in a season since Sydney Cassalia had 10 in 2018.
All in all, there is a lot to be proud of this season for the Black Knights. They repeated as regular season Patriot League Champions for the second time ever and the first time since 1991-92. They also beat Air Force and Navy in the same season for the first time since 2004 and the third time ever. Brigid Duffy's seven goals this year are the most by an Army player since 2013 when Kim An also had seven goals. 17 points from Duffy and Kaelan Bradley is the most since Alyssa Carfagno had 18 in 2019.
