Coach's Corner
"We were pretty good today. I did not know what to expect from this crew because there was very little experience in most of the competitive roster that we put on the starting line. However, the final outcome dispelled any concern that I may have had about our depth or talent or competitive fire. We have all of those things in this group. During the warmup before the race, the plebe women were restless and pushing the pace. I had to keep settling them down. The energy that they have brought to our team is palpable and I just wasn't sure whether their pre-meet energy was going to help them or hurt them. Then, when the gun went off all of our plebes charged right to the front and started pushing the pace. When you see that happen you admire the courage but at the same time you are always wondering if you are seeing false bravado or real competitive fight. As things developed, it was pretty clear that we have a lot of fight in this group. We didn't back down a bit today and it was great to see. Eventually Joanna and Claire separated from the pack and ran shoulder to shoulder at the front of the race. There was some attrition from the pack in the middle of the race but in the end almost all of our women were pushing hard all the way to the line. There was a lot of positive process today and overall it was a great start to the season." -Mike Smith
