Coach's Corner
"Van Cortlandt Park has been the site of countless cross country championship races over the past 100+ years. For our teams today, the Iona Meet of Champions was a chance to compete against some good teams but also to measure ourselves against the history books. We put together a strong but not complete lineup today and I thought that we had a good chance to be competitive at the front of the race. The first mile is flat, the second mile is all up and down while the third mile is flat. As a team we got out into the race and we did a nice job of moving up throughout the hills. Binghamton did a better job up front and that was the difference. Georgia Jones did a nice job of attaching herself to the front of the race and fighting to the line. She had a pretty long layoff from racing going back to last March. Her training build-up has gone pretty well and this was a nice rust buster for her. Claire Lewis got right out into the race and held her position throughout. She has been getting better and better and her consistency today gave us a nice spark. Joanna Halfhill dug deep today and did a nice job of moving through the field in the middle of the race and Laurynn Sisneros put together the most complete race of her young career. On the whole, we did some good things out there and we have a lot we can work on. We will get to put a more complete lineup together going into the Paul Short meet in two weeks and see how we stack up against a larger field of teams." - Mike Smith
