BOSTON – The second-seeded Army Black Knights fell to the No. 1 seed Boston U. Terriers, 14-10, in the 2022 Patriot League Championship Game on Sunday afternoon.
GAME SUMMARY
Reese Burek netted a career-high five goals to lead the Black Knights in goals and Brendan Nichtern had a game-high six points. However, Army had a season-high 24 turnovers and had seven failed clears. BU had seven Terriers with multi-point games, including five multi-goal scorers.
Nine days ago, Army left Nickerson Field victorious to secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Black Knights trailed the entire first half but used a run in the third quarter to take the lead and held on for a one-goal win. In the rematch, Army faced a similar script but this time it was the Terriers who reeled off a run in the third quarter.
The host opened the scoring three minutes into the championship game. Burek tied the game at 1-1 five minutes later when he picked up the loose ball and shot it into the open net. Boston U. added two more goals before the end of the quarter for a 3-1 lead.
Bobby Abshire, who scored four goals in the semifinals win over Loyola Maryland on May 6, got on the scoreboard 21 seconds into the second quarter. After BU made it 4-3, Burek collected his second goal with Nichtern providing the helper. BU increased its lead to 6-3 before Nichtern scored his first with 7:11 left in the quarter.
Army faced another three-goal deficit with five minutes remaining in the half. Burek notched his first half hat-trick when Nichtern's diagonal pass to Burek at the doorstep of the cage with 3:47 on the clock as the Black Knights trailed 7-5 at halftime.
BU scored 39 seconds into the third quarter, but Army's answer came from Burek who tallied consecutive goals two minutes apart. The Fairport, N.Y. native scored at the 10:48 mark and added his fifth goal of the game and 29th of the season with 8:29 remaining.
As Army was on the verge of seizing momentum, the turning point of the game occurred when the Terriers went on a 4-0 run to regain control. BU won the ensuing faceoff and scored for a 9-7 lead. They added two more goals as Army had a few turnovers during the span. The Terriers led 12-7 after three quarters.
Nichtern halted the run with a goal to open the scoring in the fourth quarter. Trailing 13-8 with 11 minutes left, the Black Knights snagged two goals 39 seconds apart. Matthew Horace scored his first goal of the season with a heave from 40 yards, taking advantage of the BU ride. Then, two of the three senior captains Nicthern and Danny Kielbasa connected for a goal to cut the lead to 13-10. Army won the ensuing faceoff, but a turnover led to a scoring opportunity for the Terriers as they made it 14-10 with 8:23 on the clock. Army only managed one shot for the rest of the game.
