Army Sweeps Colgates in Saturday Doubleheader

HAMILTON, N.Y. --- Army West Point Softball secured its spot in the 2022 Patriot League Tournament after sweeping Colgate in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights won game one 2-1 over the Raiders, then held off Colgate in a 12-8 victory.
Game 1
The Black Knights' bats were hot from the start. The game opened with a leadoff single from Jolie Duong. Maddie Wilkes fired off a two-out single to get runners on the corners for Army. The next batter was retired, leaving two runners on base and the Cadets headed back to the field. Duong (10-11) earned the start in the first game. Her and the defense had trouble as two errors were committed in the bottom of the first. Ellie Caldwell helped the Black Knights turn in frame around by creating a double play on a fouled out pop up.
The Black Knights went to work in the top of the first firing off four straight base hits to bring in one run and keep the bases loaded. Kayla Edwards recorded the RBI single for the Black Knights for the 1-0 lead. During the next at bat, Brook Mitchell advanced home on a wild pitch to give Army the 2-0 lead over Colgate.
Duong shut the Raiders down in the bottom frame, but Colgate answered back in the bottom of the third. The Raiders scored one run off an error to trail 2-1 to Army. Duong retired the next 11 straight batters, keeping Colgate off the board for the next four innings to secure the 2-1 victory for Army. The Firstie finished the game with the win and seven strikeouts.
With the first win over Colgate, Army secured its spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
Game 2
Army picked up right where it had left off in game one. Angelina Bebek drew a leadoff walk to get the game started and was followed by back-to-back singles to load the bases. Duong fired off a sacrifice fly to bring in a runner. Army finished the half inning with a 1-0 lead. Emily Iannotti was in the circle for Army and tossed three strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
Army fired off four runs on four three hits in the top of the second. Bebek recorded a two RBI single to left field extending Army's lead to 3-0. Edwards brought home Bebek and extended Army's lead by recording her second home run of the year. The Black Knights left the frame with a 5-0 lead.
Iannotti retired the side tossing two more strikeouts to keep Colgate scoreless for another half inning. In the top of the third, Bebek fired off a base hit to load the bases after two Cadets drew walks. On a wild pitch a Farris crossed home plate to bring the score to 6-0 in Army's favor.
Colgate answered with one run in the bottom of the third to make it 6-1. In the top of the fourth, Kaci Donaldson launched the ball over the fence for a three-run home run lifting Army to a 9-1 lead. The Raiders fired off their own three runs to cut the lead to 9-4.
Donaldson recorded two more RBI when she hit a single to center field in the top of the sixth. Mikayla Klepfer helped plate the final run of the game for Army in the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line. Colgate scored four more runs to make the final score 12-8 in Army's favor.
