WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three Black Knights were recognized as All Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced on Thursday. Brendan Nichtern was selected to the USILA All-American First Team, while classmates Bobby Abshire and James Pryor were named honorable mention.
Brendan Nichtern is the first Black Knight since 2019 (Johnny Surdick) to be named to the USILA First Team. Nichtern, who named to the third team as a junior and honorable mention as a freshman, was the catalyst for the nationally-ranked Black Knights while setting program records along the way. Army's career leader in points and assists was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight campaign. The Massapequa, N.Y. native set the program single-season record for points (101) and assists (60) which are second and third most, respectively, in Patriot League history. At the conclusion of Army's campaign, he ranked first in the nation in assists per game (3.75) and points per game (6.3); his 2.5 goals per game were fifth in the conference. Nichtern, who was named a Second Team All-American by USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse, is a finalist for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award which recognizes the top male college lacrosse player in the nation.
Bobby Abshire, a midfielder from Commack, N.Y., has earned All-American accolades for the first time in his career. He has posted career highs in goals with 27, including tying a career-high four at then-No. 14 Syracuse, in assists with 10, and in points with 37. He was third on the team in goals and points, and fourth in assists. He also had a career-high 13 ground balls and four caused turnovers while starting in all 16 games. Abshire was named to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second straight campaign.
James Pryor started in all 16 games as a short-stick defensive midfielder and he was part of the midfield unit that was instrumental in controlling the game. His career-high 26 ground balls, including a career-high five at Loyola Maryland, were fifth on the team and his career-high 11 caused turnovers were third. Offensively, the Melville, N.Y. native had a career-high six points on three goals and three assists. Pryor was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team and earned All-American accolades for the first time in his career.
The 2022 Black Knights finished with a 12-4 overall record, which are the second most wins in program history, and went 6-2 in league play en route to earning the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament. Army advanced to the championship game for the seventh time in program history.
Army was ranked in all three national polls – USA Lacrosse, USILA, and Inside Lacrosse – and as high as fifth in the nation. The program set a record for goals in a season (225) and extended the program's consecutive home win streak to 14 games.
