Nichtern Named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Brendan Nichtern has been selected as the 2022 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year announced on Monday. Nichtern becomes the second Black Knight to win the award twice and the fifth Patriot League student-athlete to win the award in consecutive seasons.
Nichtern entered the 2022 season as the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year after leading Army in goals (26), assists (31), and points (57) while ranking first in the conference in assists and points per game. Before the start of the 2022 campaign, he was named the 2022 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and to the Preseason All-Patriot League First Team. Nationally, he was named a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, USA Lacrosse Magazine, and USILA.
Nichtern, who is only the second two-time captain in program history, has performed to his numerous preseason honors. The Massapequa, N.Y. native has been the catalyst for the nationally-ranked Black Knights while setting program records along the way. He has become the program career leader in points and assists, and the single-season record holder in points and assists. He ranks first in the NCAA in assists per game (3.64) and second in points per game (6.14). Nichtern leads the Black Knights with 35 goals and is fifth in the league in goals per game (2.5).
On March 26, Nichtern became the program's career leader in points (239) and assists (143) as he helped rally Army to a 14-12 win at Loyola Maryland. He finished with a game-high seven points including five points in the fourth quarter. Nichtern passed Tim Pearson ('02) on both the points and assists lists and joins Pearson as the only Black Knights to be named offensive player of the year multiple times.
He set the program single-season record for points (86) breaking the record set by Tom Cafaro (85) in 1971 and assists (51) which he set in 2019 with 50 on April 29 after posting a career-high eight assists and tying a career-high 10 points in the 15-14 win at No. 15/16 Boston University. The eight assists are tied for the second-most in Army history and are tied for the most in NCAA Division I this season. The 10 points are tied for third in program history.
He was named to the Tewaaraton Award Top-25 which honors the top college lacrosse player in the nation for the third straight year. His career 3.12 assists per game lead all active NCAA Division I and his 5.27 points per game are second amongst active.
