Army Battles Boston University in Extra Innings

WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Army West Point Softball (18-30, 8-6) battled in a pitcher's duel against Boston University (36-13, 14-0), but ultimately dropped game one 2-0 in eight innings and game two 2-1 in nine innings, on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1
Jolie Duong (9-11) was dealing from the start of the game, retiring the first three Terriers to get Army to the plate. Kayla Edwards fired off the first hit of the game launching a double to left field in the bottom of the first. The sophomore was left on base as Army headed back to the field.Â

For four straight innings, Duong retired the leadoff batter for Boston. In the bottom of the fourth, Maddie Wilkes looked to get the momentum going by firing off a two-out single down the left field line. The Cadet was left on base as the next batter was retired.

In the top of the fifth, Boston hit a leadoff double and replaced the batter with a pinch runner. Brook Mitchell made a fantastic grab in center to hang one out on the board. Wilkes made another big play for the Black Knights as she dove for a fouled out pop up. Army was able to get the final out to strand the Terrier on base.

In the bottom half of the inning, Duong hit a two-out single but was left on base as her teammate was retired.

Army got the bats going in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side by Wilkes. A fielder's choice put Lauren Little on base and allowed Maaika Dones, who replaced Wilkes, move to second. Army was not able to take advantage of the runners, as one was caught stealing and the other was left on base.

Boston took over in the top half of the eighth scoring two runs on three hits and an error. The Black Knights were unable to answer in the bottom frame, falling 2-0 to the Terriers.

Game 2
Emily Iannotti (7-5) was battling in the circle for the Black Knights. She threw her first strikeout of the game for the third out of the top of the first, stranding a runner on third. In the top of the second, she retired the Terriers in order, getting Army back to the plate.
In the bottom of the second, Julianna LaRusso took advantage of a fielding error to reach first base. Dones singled to right center joining LaRusso on base and the two were moved into scoring position by Mitchell, who reached on a fielder's choice. Â Edwards was at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs on the board. The sophomore battled and drew a walk for an RBI, giving Army the 1-0 lead over Boston.

Iannotti kept Boston off the board in the top of the third but faced trouble in the top of the fourth. A walk and two errors allowed the Terriers to tie the game up at 1-1.

The teams remained scoreless for the next three innings as game two of the doubleheader headed into extra innings. The teams were scoreless in the eighth and went right into the ninth. Boston took advantage off two walks and an error to score one run in the ninth. Army was unable to answer back falling 2-1 in nine innings to Boston.

Army hosts Boston University on Sunday, May 1, at 12 p.m. and will celebrate its three seniors.
