Army Drops Midweek Contest to Fairfield
April 27, 2022 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Army West Point Softball (18-28) looked to complete the comeback on Wednesday night but ultimately fell 5-4 to Fairfield (18-20).
Â
The game opened with a dominate half inning by Fairfield as the Stags scored five runs on four hits to jump to an early 5-0 lead over Army.
Â
In the top of the second, Olivia Farris entered the circle for the Black Knights and kept Fairfield scoreless for four innings. In the bottom half of the inning, Army rattled off three runs off five hits.
Â
Julianna LaRusso and Ellie Caldwell fired of back-to-back singles for the Black Knights to get the momentum going. Brook Mitchell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her teammates into scoring position. Jolie Duong joined the runners on base with a single to load the bases for Kayla Edwards who fired off a two RBI double to get Army on the board. Leila Hurst helped plate one more run with an RBI single to make the final score of the inning 5-3 in Fairfield's favor.
Â
Farris retired the first three batters in the top of the third to get Army back to the batter's box. Maaika Dones hit a one-out single down the right field line. She quickly moved to third on a wild pitch. Fairfield made a fielding error during the next at bat and Dones took the opportunity to cross home plate, putting Army within one of Fairfield (5-4).
Â
The teams were silent for the next few innings as it became a battle of the pitchers. In the bottom of the seventh, Army was able to get a runner aboard after being hit by a pitch. The Hurst was the next batter up and took advantage of an error to take first. With two on and two out, the next two batters were retired, and Army fell 5-4 to Fairfield.
