Baseball Falls to Columbia

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team lost its in-state midweek battle against Columbia by a score of 9-4 on Wednesday evening at Johnson Stadium.
The Lions (23-13, 13-2 IVY) out-hit the Black Knights (20-19, 13-5 PL), who left six runners stranded throughout the game, 13-7. Both Derek Berg and Sam Ruta contributed a team-high two hits apiece and Cam Cerruto paced the offense with two RBI.
Mike Ruggieri (1-4) started on the bump and took the loss. He was one of six different arms that made appearances on the staff day, which saw only Anthony LoRicco (1.0 IP) and Justin Lehman (0.1 IP) have scoreless outings.
Though Army did claim a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first when Kevin Dubrule's sac fly allowed Berg to come home, it was the team's only lead of the day. Columbia responded with six runs between the second and fourth innings to build a 6-1 edge. Due to errors, Ruggieri was only on the hook for two of the runs while reliever Steven Graver was tagged with one.
Nick Manesis and Ruta gave the team a solid chance to respond in the bottom of the fourth, leading off with a single and a walk, respectively. Ross Friedrick did plate Manesis with an RBI groundout, but Ruta was left stranded when the third out was recorded.
The Cadets made one final push in the sixth when Cerruto's single drove in both Ruta and Manesis, but the Lions added three additional runs to reach their final margin of victory.
What's Next
Army will continue its home stay with a three-game series against Bucknell on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday before facing off in a single game on Sunday at the same time.
