Softball Drops Decision to Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Army West Point Softball (18-27, 8-4) dropped the Sunday single game to Holy Cross (16-28, 5-10) 7-2, to fall 2-1 the in weekend series.
The game was a battle from the start. Army was retired in order at the top of the first and headed to the field. Jolie Duong (9-10) earned the start in the circle for the Black Knights and stranded a Crusader on base in the half inning.
Army got on the board first in the top of third. Duong got the momentum going with two-out single up the middle. Kayla Edwards was the next batter up and put the ball in play. She reached on a fielder's choice, while Duong took third after a throwing error by the Crusaders. Leila Hurst entered the batter's box with runners on the corners and two outs on the board. She launched a two RBI double to right center giving Army the 2-0 lead over Holy Cross.
Holy Cross answered in the bottom frame with one run of two hits cutting Army's lead to 2-1. The Black Knights had trouble maintaining the Crusaders' offense in the bottom of the fourth as Holy Cross scored six runs off six hits and an error to take over the lead, 7-2.
Emily Iannotti entered the circle at the end of the fourth and recorded the third out to get Army back to the batter's box. She allowed just one hit in the fifth and struck out the next two batters to strand a Crusader on base. In the bottom of the sixth, the Firstie retired three batters, recording one strikeout, to get Army back to the batter's box.
Army came up short in the top of the seventh, dropping the contest 7-2 to Holy Cross.
