Army Splits a Pair of Games With Hofstra

WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Army West Point Softball (9-21, 0-1)dropped the first game to Hofstra (9-18, 2-1) 6-4 but rallied the bats in the second game as the Black Knights picked up their first win in three decades over the Pride, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1
Hofstra attacked first scoring three runs off five hits in the first inning. Jolie Duong (4-7) was in the leadoff spot for Army and fired off a base hit up the middle. Leila Hurst joined her on base after getting hit by a pitch. The Black Knights were unable to capitalize on the runners and left the two on base.
The Pride scored another run in the top of the second to lead 4-0 over Army. In the third inning, Duong got Army out of a jam with a grounded out leaving Hofstra scoreless in the half-inning. In bottom frame, Julia Farris fired off a leadoff single to get momentum going. She recorded the lone hit of the frame as Army left two on base.
Parker Llantero took over in the circle for Army in the top of the fourth and allowed just one hit in the frame to get the Black Knights back to the dugout.
Lauren Little rallied the bats in the bottom of the fourth with a single to second and quickly made her way to second with a stolen base. She advanced to third on a passed ball and was 60 feet from scoring. Mikayla Klepfer put the ball in play and was grounded out by Hofstra's second baseman but recorded the RBI as Little crossed home plate. Army finished the half-inning with one run on one hit making the score 4-1.
Hofstra answered back with two runs on two hits and two errors upping its lead to 6-1 over Army. The teams were quiet until Army made a late seventh inning push. Duong recorded a leadoff single through the right side and was followed by a double off the bat of Kayla Edwards. Duong was not on third base for long as she took advantage of a passed ball and crossed home plate, 6-2. Hurst fired off the third consecutive hit for Army to get runners on first and second with no outs on the board. Madi Gilmore put the ball in play but was grounded out by the third baseman and recorded one RBI making the score 6-3.
Hurst scored the final run for the Black Knights making the final score 6-4 in Hofstra's favor.
Game 2
Emily Iannotti (4-2) went straight to work in the circle for the Black Knights allowing just one hit in the four batters she faced in the first half-inning. Army took the momentum with it into the batter's box as the Black Knights scored three runs off four hits. Duong got the fire going with a leadoff single. Two more runners reached base before, Little recorded a two RBI single through the left side giving Army a 2-0 lead. Gilmore recorded the final RBI single of the half-inning as she launched the ball to center field. The Black Knights finished with a 3-0 lead over the Pride.
It was a battle of the pitchers for the next inning and a half before Army striked in the bottom of the third. Wilkes recorded an RBI single up the middle increasing the Cadets' lead to 4-0 over Hofstra. The Black Knights finished the half-inning with one run off two hits and one error.
Iannotti kept Hofstra silent for the next two innings before Olivia Farris entered the circle to close the game. In her first frame, the freshman retired all three batters.
Julianna LaRusso got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single and was join by Duong, who recorded a single to center. With two runners in scoring position, Edwards launched a standup double to right center giving Army a 6-0 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Hofstra fought back scoring one run before Army recorded the third out to end the game. The Black Knights picked up the 6-1 win over the Pride notching their first home win of the 2022 season.
