Bats Catch Fire at the Final Day of the Maryland Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- Army West Point softball (8-18) bats were hot on the final day of the Maryland Tournament splitting the day against Binghamton (11-10) and Monmouth (3-20).
GAME 1
Army took an early lead in the top of the first. Jolie Duong drew a leadoff walk and was quickly brought home by a double off the bat of Leila Hurst. Duong kept Binghamton off the board in the bottom half of the inning tossing one strikeout.

Binghamton put up two runs over the next two innings to take a 2-1 lead over Army at the end of the third inning. The Black Knights bounced back in the top of the fifth inning as Kayla Edwards fired off a leadoff double. Hurst hit a sacrifice fly to right field that gave Edwards time to cross home plate. Army finished the inning with one hit and one run to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams were scoreless through the next to innings, sending the game to the eighth inning. With Madi Gilmore on second, Lauren Little hit a sacrifice bunt to move her over to third. Ellie Caldwell brought Gilmore home with a base hit to give Army the 3-2 lead. Parker Llantero (1-1) entered the circle for Army and recorded the first two outs. Binghamton bounced back to score three runs off one hit and one error.
GAME 2
Monmouth got on the board first back scoring one run in the first inning. The Black Knights rallied in the bottom of the second. Little hit a leadoff double to get momentum started for Army. Caldwell followed with a single to the shortstop to move Little scoring position. Gilmore brought Little home with a bunt single to tie the game up. Army scored two more runs to take a 3-1 lead over Monmouth.

Emily Iannotti (3-2) was in the circle for Army and kept Monmouth off the board two the next two innings. The Hawks put up one more run in the top of the fifth to cut the Black Knights' lead to 3-2.

The bats caught fire for Army in the bottom of the sixth as Army scored seven runs off five hits and one error. Maddie Wilkes got the momentum started with a leadoff single to left field. Gilmore recorded the first of three doubles in the frame and brought in two runners. Edwards recorded an RBI single while Hurst followed with a two RBI double. Wilkes closed the inning for Army with an RBI double to put the run rule into play. The Black Knights secured the 10-2 win over the Hawks.
