Army Drops Second Day of USF Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. --- Army West Point Softball (5-14) battled on the second day of the USF Tournament but fell to UMass (5-12) , 8-3, and Ohio State (11-3), 14-0, on Saturday.
GAME 1
Army got on the board first in the top of the first with a solo home run off the bat of Leila Hurst. Maddie Wilkes added on another hit with a double to right-center before the Black Knights headed to the field. UMass was quick to answer pushing one run off one hit and one error in the bottom of the first.
Lauren Little fired off the lone hit for Army in the second inning, hitting a double to right center. Olivia Farris (0-7) was in the circle for Army and kept UMass off the board in the second inning. Hurst got the bats going in the top of the third with a base hit to right field. Wilkes was the next batter up and drew a walk to reach base. The two Black Knights took advantage of a wild pitch to move into scoring position. Madi Gilmore recorded a base hit to bring in Hurst to secure a 2-1 lead for Army.
The teams were silent until UMass pushed five runs off four hits and one error in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead over the Cadets. UMass was able to get another run in the bottom of the fifth to lead 7-2 over Army.
Army made one last rally in the top of the sixth off a single from Kayla Edwards to bring in the final run for the Cadets. UMass pushed one more run in the sixth to win 8-3 over Army.
GAME 2
Army had trouble containing Ohio State's offense from the start. The Buckeyes jumped to an earlier 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Wilkes fired off a base hit in the bottom of the first, but the Black Knights were unable to capitalize on it leaving her on base.
Ohio State scored eight runs in the next two innings to increase its lead to 11-0 over Army. In the bottom of the third, Edwards fired off a base hit but was left on base. Farris replaced Jolie Duong (4-4) in the third inning and kept the Buckeyes off the board in the top of the fourth. Wilkes recorded the last hit for Army, but the Cadets came up short at the plate.
Ohio State scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the final score 14-0.
