Softball Battles At Second Day of Classic

Jolie Duong, Kayla Edwards and Madi Gilmore had strong showings at the plate. Gilmore and Duong each recorded home runs while Edwards went 2-for-3 at the plat against SDSU.

GAME 1
Army had a strong start but were unable to keep up with CBU at the plate. Duong led the team with two hits, one run and three RBI. Brook Mitchell recorded two hits in the game and scored one run for the team. Emily Iannotti (0-1) was in the circle for the Black Knights and recorded three strikeouts.

The Cadets got on the board first in the top of the first. Mitchell hit a leadoff single to get momentum going and Duong followed with one of her own. Edwards was grounded out but was able to record the RBI by bringing in Mitchell. In the bottom frame CBU was able to capitalize on errors to plate two runs taking a 2-1 advantage over Army.

The teams went scoreless in the second, before Duong broke the silence with a solo-shot homer down the right field line, 2-2. Edwards kept the bats going with a double to right center. She was able to move into scoring position off a wild pitch. Hurst was able to bring Edwards home off a fielder's choice to first base helping Army take a 3-2 lead over CBU.

The Black Knights were able to keep the Lancers off the board as Iannotti only faced four batters in the frame. In the top of fourth Army loaded the bases off two hits and a walk. Duong drove in two runners to increase Army's lead to 5-2.

CBU pushed two runs in the fifth inning to cut Army's lead to 5-2. Parker Llantero made her first appearance in the circle during the fifth inning. Â The Black Knights came up short in the top of the sixth and went back to the field. CBU plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame to win 8-5 over Army.

GAME 2

The Aztecs' offense gave Army trouble from the start scoring three runs of one hit in the top of the first. Edwards fought back in the second sending a single to second but was left on base. In the second inning Army held SDSU to just one run, 4-0.

Gilmore hit a single to left field get momentum going for the Black Knights. She kept the fire going by stealing second but was left on base as the team came up short at the plate. SDSU plated two runs in the top of the fourth to increase its lead to 6-0 over Army.

In the fifth inning Llantero entered the circle to replace Duong (1-1) and kept the Aztecs off the board for the first time in the game sending Army to the batter's box. Edwards fired off a leadoff single and was followed by Kaci Donaldson with a walk to land two runners on base. Gilmore was up next and fired the ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run to cut the Aztecs' lead to three (6-3). Llantero went to work again and kept SDSU off the scoreboard and sent Army back to the plate. Army was unable to capitalize in the batter's box and quickly went back to the field.
SDSU plated one more run to make the final score 7-3 in the Aztec's favor. Â
