February 18, 2022 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With just one day remaining of the 2021-22 Patriot League Championship, the Army West Point swimming & diving team is in solid position as the men are second in the team standings and the women check in at third.
Â
On the men's side, Army (517 points) trails Navy (643.50) but holds a significant lead over third-place Bucknell (394 points). Navy additionally leads the women's competition with 631.5 points, though second-place Bucknell has a narrow lead over the Cadets at 399.5-380.
Â
The third day of action at the conference finale was highlighted by 14 different podium spots for the Black Knights. Other significant achievements of the day included Daniel Alaimo becoming the program's first diver to capture both the 1- and 3-meter boards since 2013, Evan Yoo's program/plebe record in the 400 IM and Owen Harlow's new 50 Free program record, which he set during the opening leg of the 200 Free Relay.
Â
The Men's Meet
Army's well-balanced attack helped the team turn in yet another successful day of competition, as the team was represented in six of seven scoring finals.
Â
The Black Knights picked up their first points of the day, as well as a bronze medal, in the 400 IM when Yoo touched the wall in 3:48.75, setting a new program/plebe record. His NCAA B Cut was one of four scoring swims that Army had in the event, as Alex Edwards (fifth), Sam Wesley (seventh) and CJ Bernauer (eighth) also contributed.
Â
In the following race, Sean Dwyer collected the team's second-straight bronze when he finished third in the 200 Free with a time of 1:36.51, just 0.02 seconds off a new program record. Dwyer, Tanner Falls (fifth), Ian Tansill (sixth), Wes Tate (ninth), Will Rankin (11th) and Owen Harlow (12th) combined for a huge 63 points in the mid-distance event.
Â
Though Army missed earning top-three finishes in the next two events, the 100 Breast and 100 Back, Daniel Alaimo got the team back on top when he posted his second victory of the meet. The senior scored 342.80 points on the 1M board after capturing the 3M title earlier this week and was joined on the podium by David Manelis, whose score of 309.95 was good for third. Isaac Newman was an additional scorer for the Cadets, placing fourth in a highly-competitive field.
Â
After diving, the Black Knights closed out Friday's finals session by putting together a dominant performance in the 200 Free Relay. Owen Harlow led things off with a 19.67-second 50 Free, establishing a new program record and out-swimming all of the other leadoff athletes. Army eventually went on to secure a third-place finish in the event, with Harlow being joined on the podium by Will Rankin, Ian Shahan and Nick Isenhower.
Â
The Women's Meet
After two days of holding second place in the team standings, the Black Knights dipped slightly on the third day of action at the Patriot League Championship. Army secured medals in three of six events to keep now-second place Bucknell within striking distance.
Â
