WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 10/11 Army West Point Black Knights opened their 2022 campaign with a 14-13 victory over UMass on Saturday at Michie Stadium.
Game Summary
Brendan Nichtern paced the Black Knights offensively, finishing with a game-high five goals and three assists to tie a career-high in points with eight. In goal, Wyatt Schulper saved a career-high 18 shots including six in the first quarter.
The Black Knights pushed through in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Army jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with Nichtern scoring the first goal of the season at the 12:55 mark. Aiden Brynes followed with a man-up goal one minute later. After UMass tied the game at 2-2 with 5:56 left in the quarter, Army responded with four straight goals to close out the quarter with a 6-2 lead.
There were five combined goals scored through the opening five minutes of the second quarter with Army holding an 8-5 advantage. Bo Waters scored with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter as the Black Knights went into halftime leading 9-6. UMass rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Army 4-1, including scoring with one second on the clock to tie the game at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
The score remained tied at 10-10 until Nichtern netted a pair of games at the 9:04 and 6:42 marks in the fourth quarter. Army's defense limited scoring opportunities for the visitors in the final minutes. Reese Burek made at 14-11 with 1:13 left before UMass added two late goals.
