Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, TX. - Army West Point women's basketball (1-2, 0-0 PL) fell on the road to Texas A&M Sunday afternoon, 73-49.
Freshman Reese Ericson continued her hot start to her rookie campaign banging a three-pointer to put Army on the board early in the first quarter. A few minutes later, Ericson banged another to shorten Army's deficit to 10-6 with under four minutes to play in the opening period. Both teams got off to sluggish starts from the field as Army shot 3-11 and A&M shot 5-20 in the first quarter. After one quarter, A&M led, 15-8.
At the break, Texas A&M led, 35-16. Army shot just 6-23 (26%) from the field in the first half. Aggies Janiah Barker paced all scorers through the first twenty minutes with 12 points on 6-12 shooting. Army's Sabria Hunter posted six first half rebounds.
In the third quarter Army shot better, shooting 6-14 (42.9%) from the field, but so did Texas A&M, who shot 10-17 (58.8%) outscoring Army, 25-16 in the quarter. However, Army was 2-2 from three-point range as Charlotte Richman knocked down triple as well as Kamryn Hall. Entering the fourth quarter, Army trailed, 60-32.
Despite a 28-point deficit, Army continued to fight in the fourth quarter. Through the first six minutes of the period, Army outscored A&M, 13-7, behind six points from Sabria Hunter and a three-point make from Vasana Kearney to cut the lead to 22, 67-45. The Black Knights finished the quarter strong shooting 5-11 (45.5%) from the field, winning the quarter, 17-13. However, Texas A&M hung on for a comfortable 73-49 win over Army.
The Aggies were led by three scorers that reach double figures, Barker (17), Sahara Jones (11), and Sydnee Roby (10). Jones posted a double-double with 11 rebounds, a game-high.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Freshman Reese Ericson connected on two three-point makes in the first quarter, finishing with eight points. She also had a game high of nine assists. Through her first collegiate week, she has shot 7-14 (50%) from three-point range and is averaging 11.3 points per game.
- Ericson's nine assists were the most by an freshman/plebe in a single game in at least 13 years. Also her nine assists are also tied for the most by an Army player in a single game since 2009-10.
- Sabria Hunter scored a team high 12 points for Army. She has scored in double figures in each of the first three games of the season. Through three games, she is averaging 17.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.
- Army improved upon poor first half shooting 6-23 (26%), to shoot 11-25 (44%) in the second half.
- Army shot 5-11 (45.5) from three-point range in the game.
- The difference in the game came on the offensive glass, as the Aggies captured 28 offensive rebounds to Army's eight, leading to 24 second chance points to Army's four.
