How it Happened
The Black Knights came out firing on their opening drive. Junior quarterback Mikal Willeke rushed eights yards to put the Black Knights on the board early with twelve minutes on the clock. Not finished, Willeke then connected with junior Cody Lominac for a 13-yard receiving touchdown extending the Black Knights lead to 14-0 with six minutes left in the first quarter.
Â
Army's defense also came out strong holding the Spartans to three plays in their opening drive. Junior Christian Dionisio tackled STAC Elizah Gordon, holding him to seven yards in the drive, forcing the Spartans to punt.
Â
Going into the second quarter leading 21-7, Army further extended its lead with additional touchdowns. Willeke started the quarter with a nine-yard rushing touchdown. He again connected with Lominac for an eight-yard touchdown pass, giving the Black Knights a 34-7 lead to conclude the first half.
Â
In two quarters of action Mikal Willeke had another strong game, finishing with a career high of 325 yards, five touchdowns - three rushing and two passing - and completing 20 of 34 attempts. Coming in as relief, junior quarterback Seth Brown went 3-for-6 for 45 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Justin Fitzgerald came in the fourth quarter completing four passes for 25 yards.
Â
The Black Knights defense maintained their dominance over the Spartans offense for the remainder of the game. Seniors Sebastian Russell and Dionisio led Army's defense with six total tackles and 1.5 sacks for a loss of ten yards. Sophomore defensive back Brendan Tierney had a productive game with one interception and two tackles, including one tackle for a loss of four yards.Â
