There's No Place Like Home
- The Black Knights are coming home after earning a 43-10 victory to start the season at Georgia State, marking head coach Jeff Monken's 50th win at Army.
- The contest with the Hilltoppers will be the team's first in front of fans at Michie Stadium since a 47-6 victory over VMI on Nov. 16, 2019 as COVID-19 restrictions stipulated that only West Point personnel and the Corps of Cadets could attend home contests in 2020. The Corps undoubtedly played a crucial role in the Black Knights' 8-0 record at Michie Stadium last season.
- Prior to the start of the 2021 campaign, the Army West Point Athletics Association (AWPAA) announced initial plans for the launch of the $95 million Michie Stadium Preservation Project.Â
- The project will introduce all-new premium areas for guests with the addition of suite, loge, ledge, and club-level seating. Additionally, the plans also include a complete reconstruction of the East Stands. Since its official launch, AWPAA and the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) have publicly announced over $65 million in support.
- This progressive initiative will help to preserve and protect Michie Stadium's history, tradition and "once-in-a-lifetime experience" for generations to come. Additionally, it will help to bolster the efforts of the Black Knights, who have posted a dominant 24-2 mark at home over the past four seasons.
Rushing Attack
- The famed triple option led Army to yet another season among the nation's offensive leaders in 2020. The Black Knights finished fourth in the country in rushing offense with 273.0 ypg, despite playing five more contests than the three teams that placed ahead in the standings.
- During its 2020 slate, the team rushed for 400-or-more yards on two separate occasions, first doing so against Louisiana-Monroe (439 yds.) before besting the feat against Abilene Christian (441 yds.).
- Quarterback Tyhier Tyler returns as the team leader in rushing after capping off the previous campaign with 578 yards from 139 carries. His net yardage checked in at 81st among all players in FBS football and he additionally punched in 10 touchdowns.
- In total, Tyler was one of five Cadets that finished the season with over 300 yards as he was joined by Jakobi Buchanan (474 yds.), Tyrell Robinson (424 yds.), Christian Anderson (419 yds.) and Anthony Adkins (302 yds.). All five players are back in Army uniforms this season.Â
Series History
- This will be the fourth game between Army and Western Kentucky since first meeting in 2013.
- The Hilltoppers own a 3-0 advantage in the series, though two of those outings have been decided by less than 10 points.
- In the last meeting in 2019, the Black Knights fell 17-8 on the road against the Hilltoppers. Army scored a late touchdown and two-point conversion, but was unable to overtake Western Kentucky for the lead.
- The team's defensive efforts were highlighted by Cole Christiansen and Elijah Riley, who each tallied double-digit tackles.
The Hilltoppers at a Glance
- Western Kentucky also enters today's game 1-0 after earning a decisive 59-21 victory over UT Martin at its home stadium.
- In his debut with the Hilltoppers, quarterback Bailey Zappe threw for 424 yards and seven touchdowns in a game that saw the team put up its highest score since the 2016 season.
- After throwing an interception to start the game and punting on their second drive, Western Kentucky went on to score on each of its following possessions. In total, the team put up 587 total yards of offense and had six different players score touchdowns.
- The Hilltoppers are coming off a 5-7 season in 2020, which ended with a 39-21 loss to Georgia State in the 22nd Annual LendingTree Bowl.
- In total, Western Kentucky lost over 110 career starts from last year's team as SAF Devon Key (49), OL Jordan Meredith (37) and CB Dionte Ruffin (25) all went on to play in the NFL.Â
