How It Happened
After their first three drives came up short, Army broke into the end-zone at the end of the first quarter when senior quarterback JC Watson found Donovan Mannion for a one-yard score to give Army the 7-0 advantage. Â Mannion's score was set up by a 29-yard catch and run by Kraig Hamilton on the previous play.Â
The Army defense did not miss a single beat in the contest, giving the ABU offense practically no room to operate throughout all four quarters. After the first touchdown, Alex Sobeski and Mason Goulet both recorded sacks on the following Battler possession to put the ball back in the hands of their offense.
The ensuing Black Knight possession started off with a pair of Landry Songer rushes that got Army across midfield and into Battler territory. After another pair of draws from Songer, Watson connected with Mannion once again for another touchdown, this time from 24 yards out.
After another forced three-and-out by the Army defense, Coach Mark West put the ball in quarterback, Mikal Willeke's hands. Willeke wasted no time getting to work, completing his first three passes to Mannion, Cruz Crawford and Jacob Turner, respectively. His next toss was a 40-yard connection to Mannion, who hauled in the pass from Willleke and sprinted 40 yards to pay-dirt. Willeke would follow up the 40-yard touchdown with a 33-yard strike to Jeremiah Garrett just three minutes later to give Army a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.
Army's first drive of the second half was cut short after Willeke's only incompletion of the contest. However, Justin Fitzgerald was able to pin the Battlers deep in their own half of the field after a punt was downed at the ABU 3-yard line. Alex Sobeski added to his already strong performance, bringing down the ABU back in the end zone to force a safety. The senior captain finished the game with four tackles, two sacks and two tackles for a loss.
Jacob Turner, Justin Fitzgerald and Henry Beck would all score the final three Army touchdowns. Ben Abercrombie added a field goal to bring the final score to 54-0.
